Merrow & Clarke Books in Order

Merrow & Clarke sits at the hard edge of Jane Adams's contemporary crime fiction. These are fast, pressured books where people are already in danger before the police even arrive, and where the threat does not stay neatly boxed up as a puzzle.

At the centre are Petra Merrow and Toby Clarke. Petra is the risk-taker, the officer willing to get close to violent people and step into situations that can turn without warning. Toby is steadier and more openly procedural, but no less stubborn once a case lands on his desk. They are not a polished detective duo who solve everything with easy banter. Their partnership is still being built, and that uncertainty gives the series much of its energy.

The first book, Safe, opens with Lauren Sykes, a teenage girl trying to escape the criminal world she was born into. She has spent her life learning that safety is conditional, and usually short-lived. Petra becomes the person standing between Lauren and the men who want control back. That setup tells you what Adams is interested in here. Not just who committed the crime, but what fear does to people, how much trust can be asked of them, and what protection really costs.

These are not cozy police stories.

The second book, Kidnap, pushes even harder. Missing toddlers, frightened families and a community too scared to talk give the story a grim engine from the start. By then Petra and Toby know each other better, but that does not make the work easier. Petra is still carrying danger from an earlier case, and Toby is learning that procedure only gets you so far when witnesses believe speaking up may get someone killed.

Organised crime presses in from the edges of both books. So does corruption, or at least the fear of it. Informants are compromised because compromised is how they stay alive. Families lie because they are terrified. Even the people Merrow and Clarke are trying to save may be hiding crucial facts. Adams keeps the pace moving, but she never flattens the human mess to make the solution tidier.

That is the appeal of the series. You get the urgency of a thriller, but also the slower, more uncomfortable work of police trying to work out who can be believed, who is trapped, and who is doing the trapping. Petra and Toby are good together because they do not always see the same shape in a case at the same time, and the friction between instinct and method keeps the books lively.

If you want to start here, begin with Safe. It introduces the world, the partnership and the balance Adams keeps returning to, action on the surface, pressure underneath, and two detectives learning how to work together while the ground keeps shifting.
