Series background & context
The Mermaid Mystery books take Diane Vallere's interest in clues and drop it underwater. The setting is Sirenia, a mermaid city with its own customs, politics, treasures, and old tensions. Crimes are not supposed to define life there, which is exactly why each new disturbance feels so unsettling.
The center of the series is three sisters: Zoe, Kyra, and Ava. They do not come at problems the same way. Zoe is curious and restless, Kyra is underestimated until she decides not to be, and Ava carries the weight of leadership and family expectation. Each novella hands the spotlight to a different sister, which lets the same world open up from three angles.
That structure is one of the pleasures here. Tails from the Deep leans into exploration and first discovery. Murky Waters turns suspicion inward, as Kyra begins to suspect corruption close to home. Sleeping With The Fishes asks what leadership costs when the danger is no longer distant. Read together, the stories build a larger picture of Sirenia and the forces pressing on it.
Even with mermaids, this is still a mystery series. There are dead bodies, thefts, secrets, and overlapping investigations, but the fantasy setting changes the texture of the clues. Coral, treasure vaults, sea creatures, songs, old lore, and the boundary between the mermaid world and the human one all matter.
The tone is lighter and more fable-like than Vallere's contemporary cozies, but the stakes are real. A lot of the heart comes from sisterhood. These books keep asking what the sisters owe one another, what they owe their city, and how much they are willing to risk once they understand the size of the threat.
If you want a short, imaginative mystery series with a strong sense of place, this is a fun one to try. Start with Tails from the Deep if you want the stories one at a time, or think of the whole line as one connected underwater mystery told in three voices.
