Then the magic barges in and wrecks the schedule. That balance is a big part of the appeal. The series never forgets that magical disasters are funniest when they interrupt a perfectly regular day.

The bond between Gracie and Merlin carries the whole thing. He is ridiculous, but he is also genuinely important to her. She complains, he meddles, and together they make a good reluctant team. As the cases grow bigger, from a dead boss to a hostile ghost to necromantic chaos, that partnership becomes the emotional center.
