Series background & context

The Melungeon Witch stories are short historical mysteries with romance, folklore, and a touch of supernatural unease. Set in Appalachia near Sneedville, Tennessee, between the two world wars, the series follows Cephea Collins, a Melungeon healer, and Daniel Praeger, the local sheriff who learns that easy answers are rarely the right ones.

Cephea knows the practical uses of plants, poultices, and local remedies, but her neighbors often see something more threatening in her knowledge. As a Melungeon woman, she is treated with suspicion and subjected to gossip by people who fear what they do not understand. When a young woman is murdered after meeting Cephea, that prejudice makes her the obvious target for blame.

Daniel is not convinced. In The Melungeon Witch, he investigates the killing while confronting the town's assumptions about Cephea and about witchcraft itself. He has seen enough loss to distrust simple stories, but his growing feelings for the woman he is supposed to question make the case more complicated. Their connection is a continuing thread, even when the danger comes from very human motives.

Each later story gives the pair another tightly focused problem. Return of the Melungeon Witch places Cephea's feelings for Daniel under strain when a murder case involves his former girlfriend. The Melungeon Witch's Ghost begins when Daniel's young son finds a dead man in the woods. Other stories involve a wounded stranger carrying gold, a poisoned arrow, an attack on a pregnant woman, and people determined to use scandal or fear against Cephea.

The past is close in these tales.

The series uses an isolated mountain setting to make every rumor matter. A stranger's arrival can upset the whole community, and family connections, old accusations, and social standing can be as dangerous as a weapon. Daniel's role as sheriff gives him a formal duty to investigate, while Cephea's work as a healer puts her in the middle of private grief, illness, and secrets that others would rather keep hidden.

These are not long, sprawling fantasy novels. They are brisk suspense stories with a historical setting, a recurring couple, and questions about whether strange events have a supernatural cause or a darker human explanation. The romance unfolds alongside the mysteries rather than replacing them, and the books return often to the cost of being labeled an outsider.

Start with The Melungeon Witch. The stories are short enough to read quickly, but their shared setting and the gradual change in Cephea and Daniel's relationship make the publication order the best way to follow them.
