Melanie Hansen spent thirteen years working as a court reporter, a job that put her close to the messier, stranger, and more human sides of people’s lives. It gave her plenty to observe, from tense courtrooms to stories that could be painful, surprising, or darkly funny.

Her work also took her into prisons in Texas and Florida. Those experiences seem to have strengthened her interest in people trying to get through difficult circumstances without being reduced to the worst thing that has happened to them.

That idea runs through much of her fiction.

Hansen’s path to publishing began with fanfiction. In 2012, she found an M/M romance series about two FBI agents and started writing the scenes and possibilities she wanted to explore further. One story led to another, then to National Novel Writing Month in 2013. Her first published novel, Everything Changes, arrived in 2015.

That book introduces two former Marines, Carey Everett and Jase DeSantis, whose friendship was shaped by service in Afghanistan and the aftermath of a devastating injury. It sets the pattern for many Hansen stories: a romance built around people carrying real burdens, talking imperfectly, and trying to let someone close.

The stakes are often personal before they are dramatic.

In Signs of Life, a grieving lawyer and a teacher with a difficult past find their way toward connection. Unquiet follows two childhood friends confronting the realities of bipolar disorder, recovery, and the limits of what love alone can fix. These are romances that make room for grief, mental health, fear, and long memories without treating any of them as easy problems.

Hansen also writes about military life with the perspective of someone raised by an Air Force father and married to a Navy man. Loving a Warrior puts attraction and ambition inside the punishing routine of Navy SEAL training, while Point of Contact follows a father and his son’s fellow soldier as they face a shared loss. Readers looking for slow-building relationships, emotional honesty, and characters who have to work for trust will find that combination across her books.

Her Spectrum Nights novels, Pieces of Me and See My Words, shift to a younger pair, Scott Ashworth and Rylan Mahoney. Their story moves from a difficult adolescence in the Florida Panhandle to a reunion in Phoenix, with old secrets and shaky self-worth still in the way. Hansen returns to a question she clearly cares about: what does it take to believe you deserve care?

Away from fiction, Hansen left courtroom reporting for work transcribing for a deaf student. She lives in Arizona with her husband and two sons. Her books keep returning to people who are bruised, guarded, and still hoping that a good relationship can be built one honest choice at a time.
