Author bio
Melanie Dobson grew up among the rolling hills and Amish farms of rural Ohio, where a bookmobile became a big part of her week. As a child, she rode her bike to meet it, loaded books into her basket, and read her way through mysteries and adventures.
Her father gave her a small red journal when she was eight. She filled it with everyday observations at first, then began making up mysteries of her own.
Writing stayed with her. In high school, a teacher asked her to keep a daily journal, a habit that continued through college in Virginia and for years afterward. Dobson earned a journalism degree, worked as a typesetter at a weekly newspaper in Virginia Beach, wrote a column, and later moved into public relations.
Her career took her to Colorado Springs, where she worked for Focus on the Family. She later started her own public relations company as her husband Jon's animation work moved the family around the country. Those jobs taught her plenty about words, audiences, deadlines, and showing up to finish a project.
Fiction took longer. Dobson spent years writing, revising, researching, attending conferences, and collecting rejection letters before her first novel found a home. While living in Germany with Jon and their two young daughters, she began a story about a failed adoption. That novel became Together for Good, published in 2006.
That was the turn.
Dobson's books often begin with a place that holds a secret, an old house, a castle, a forgotten tunnel, or an object that connects one life to another. Her early novels include the adoption story Together for Good, the gambling-addiction drama Going for Broke, and The Black Cloister, a suspense novel set around a dangerous religious cult in Germany.
She has also written historical romances set at key moments in American history, including the Oregon Trail story The Journey and the Underground Railroad novel The Runaway. Later work such as Chateau of Secrets, Catching the Wind, Hidden Among the Stars, Memories of Glass, and The Winter Rose moves between past and present, often following ordinary people caught in the long reach of war, family silence, loss, and hard-won trust.
Readers who enjoy Dobson tend to come for the puzzle as much as the history. Her stories pair romance or mystery with faith, and they give present-day characters a reason to keep looking into what happened long ago. World War II Europe appears often, but so do American towns, island communities, old estates, and the rough edges of family life.
Several of her books have received Carol Awards, and Catching the Wind also won an Audie Award for inspirational fiction. She has written biblical fiction and a middle-grade fantasy series as well, which shows her interest in taking a story in more than one direction.
Dobson and her family settled in Oregon. She continues to write, teach writing and public relations, and follow the questions that old documents, unusual places, and buried family stories can raise.
