Author bio

Megan E. O'Keefe came to fiction from a life already crowded with words. She was raised among journalists, and as soon as she could, she made her own tiny publication, a newsletter about the local cat population.

That mix of curiosity and playfulness still feels like part of her work.

Before her novels found a wide audience, O'Keefe worked in arts management and graphic design. She also won Writers of the Future, an early sign that her short fiction could land fast and leave a mark. Those jobs seem to fit the books she writes now, which are often carefully built, full of moving parts, and still very interested in people.

Her fantasy debut, Steal the Sky, arrived in 2016 and won the Gemmell Morningstar Award. It introduced the Scorched Continent books, a dusty, airship-filled fantasy setting where cons, politics, prison breaks, and war keep crashing into each other. The later novella The Proposal Game returns to that world for a smaller Detan Honding story.

Then she jumped from desert fantasy to space opera.

With Velocity Weapon, O'Keefe moved into science fiction and did not exactly ease in. The book starts with soldier Sanda Greeve waking centuries after a battle on an enemy ship run by an AI, and it opens into the Protectorate trilogy, a story about family, war, hidden systems, and the dangerous things people inherit. Velocity Weapon was nominated for the Philip K. Dick Award, and it helped establish her as a writer readers turn to for big plots that still feel personal.

She kept pushing outward after that. The First Omega is a short, sharp dystopian novella set in a brutal desert, while The Blighted Stars begins the Devoured Worlds trilogy with a revolutionary, a reluctant heir, and a dead planet full of hard truths. The Fractured Dark and The Bound Worlds build that story into something larger, but the center stays human: loyalty, survival, class, love, and what happens when the systems running the world are rotten all the way through.

Her newer standalone The Two Lies of Faven Sythe shows another side of that same interest. It brings in a missing mentor, a feared cosmic graveyard, a pirate with secrets, and a mystery that keeps widening the farther the story goes. Across fantasy and science fiction, O'Keefe keeps coming back to uneasy alliances, pressured decisions, smart people improvising under terrible conditions, and worlds where the machinery of power never quite works the way it claims to.

She now lives in the Puget Sound area of Washington and spends her free time tinkering with whatever she can get her hands on. That practical streak fits the fiction. Even when the scale gets huge, there is usually somebody fixing a ship, running a con, breaking out of prison, decoding a mystery, or solving a problem the hard way.

Her books think big, but they stay close to the people inside the machinery.
