Author bio
Megan Crane was born in Houston, Texas, and grew up in Ridgewood, New Jersey. She has said that one of the first big sparks came when she found a romance novel in a bargain bin at a local five-and-dime when she was twelve. That mix of adventure, longing, and total emotional commitment clearly stayed with her.
She took the long route into a writing career, and that shows up in her books in a good way.
After graduating from Vassar College, Crane went on to the University of York in England, where she earned both an MA and a PhD in English literature. She later taught creative writing, including through UCLA Extension, and also contributed to craft books for working writers. There is a lot of range in her backlist, but there is also a strong sense that she knows exactly how stories are built.
Her first novel, English as a Second Language, came out in 2004. It introduced the version of Crane many readers first met, funny, sharp, and interested in women who are stuck, restless, or one bad decision away from changing everything. Books like Everyone Else's Girl, Frenemies, and Names My Sisters Call Me kept working in that lane, mixing romance, family tension, friendship trouble, and the awkward business of becoming an adult.
Then she widened the map.
As Megan Crane, she has written contemporary romance, small-town westerns, romantic suspense, and darker speculative romance. If you start with SEAL's Honor, you get ex-special-ops danger and a rugged Alaska setting. If you pick up Tempt Me, Cowboy or Most Dangerous Cowboy, you land in Montana among rodeos, family businesses, and people who fall in love after insisting they absolutely will not. If you go for Edge of Obsession, you get a wrecked future, Viking-flavored raiders, and a very different kind of emotional pressure.
She also writes under other names, including Caitlin Crews and M.M. Crane, and she is one half of Hazel Beck with Nicole Helm. That helps explain how broad her shelf is. Some readers know her for glamorous category romance and fierce alpha heroes. Others know her for small-town cowboys, Alaska-set suspense, or newer paranormal stories like The Reveal.
But the through line is easy to spot.
Crane likes characters under pressure. Her books return again and again to women rebuilding after betrayal, men with too much control and not enough peace, tight communities, dangerous attraction, and the question of what happens when two people cannot stay away from each other even when common sense says they should. Sometimes the setting is a college town or a snowy ranch. Sometimes it is a monster-ridden Oregon valley. The emotional logic is still hers.
Place matters in her work, too. England, Montana, Alaska, and the Pacific Northwest all feel different on the page, and not just because the scenery changes. Crane tends to use setting as pressure. The weather, the town, the family land, the isolation, all of it pushes the characters into choices they would rather postpone.
Her official bio says she has written more than 150 books, which makes her one of those authors whose career is best understood by browsing, not by picking a single lane and staying there. She still writes under multiple names, still shifts between subgenres, and still seems happiest when a story starts with trouble and refuses to let up.
These days she lives in the Pacific Northwest with her husband, comic book artist Jeff Johnson. Her bio also suggests she is often in a coffee shop or off traveling somewhere, which feels right for a writer whose books are always moving.
