Meet the Parents

by Emily Shiner

2024

Ready to marry into money, a young woman agrees to spend a weekend at her fiancé's secluded family home. His parents seem warm, but strict rules, locked rooms, and the mention of a previous girlfriend who left suddenly make her wonder what really happens in this house.

Series background & context

Meet the Parents is Emily Shiner's psychological thriller series about Gina and Dr Owen Whitlock, whose relationship draws them into dangerous family visits. Meeting a partner's parents is supposed to help everyone get to know one another. Here, introductions become contests over what to reveal, what to conceal and who can be trusted. The danger grows inside apparently welcoming homes, where politeness gives people a way to hide their intentions.

In Meet the Parents, Gina arrives at Owen's family home with reasons of her own for wanting to be there. Their relationship began with a meeting she deliberately arranged at the hospital, although her feelings for him have become more complicated than she expected. She needs to keep her identity and motives hidden from his parents. That makes the visit much more than a test of whether his family approves of her.

Owen's mother, Marta, has her own concerns. Overlooked by her husband, she doesn't want to lose her son's attention to Gina. Her plan is to win the younger woman's trust, but that friendliness comes with another purpose. Owen wants the weekend to go well and hopes to marry Gina, yet he also knows his mother is hiding something. These competing interests put several versions of the family in play at once.

Nobody arrives at the table without something to protect.

The first novel concentrates its action into a weekend at the Whitlocks' house in the woods. That enclosed setting makes family tension harder to escape: the people whose hospitality Gina must accept are also the people she has reasons to watch. Shiner combines domestic suspense with questions about the past, allowing the ordinary rituals of a visit to carry a threat. The story depends on what people think they know about one another and how carefully they manage appearances.

Meet the In-Laws continues Gina and Owen's relationship while reversing the visit. Now married, they go to see Gina's parents, with whom she has never been close. Her mother Carol welcomes them, but expensive possessions and changes around the house leave Gina wondering where the money came from. Owen's apparent familiarity with her family creates another problem. Gina has brought him there with a plan, yet she may understand the situation less well than she thought.

Read Meet the Parents first to follow the relationship from its earlier stage, then Meet the In-Laws for the next family encounter. The second novel can also stand alone. Across both, the focus stays on family loyalties, hidden motives and the fear that the people offering a welcome may also be the people putting someone in danger.
