Series background & context

The Me Before You series centers on Louisa Clark, a woman who leads a very small life. She counts her steps to the bus stop, she enjoys the safety of her job at a local café, and she suspects she might not actually love her boyfriend, Patrick. She is content with staying inside her comfort zone in her quiet English town. But when she loses her job, desperation forces her into the orbit of Will Traynor.

Will is her opposite in almost every way. Once a wealthy, adventurous high-flyer who scaled mountains and traveled the globe, a motorcycle accident has left him quadriplegic and deeply bitter. He feels his life is effectively over, while Lou has barely started hers. When she is hired as his caregiver, it initially seems like a recipe for disaster. She is chatty and dresses in eccentric, neon-colored outfits, while he is moody, sarcastic, and determined to push people away.

Yet, this friction eventually gives way to a profound bond. They challenge each other’s worldviews in ways neither expected. Will pushes Lou to expand her horizons and demand more for herself, and Lou tries to show Will that life is still worth living, even if it looks different than before.

It is not a typical fairy tale.

While the first novel, Me Before You, focuses on this intense, transformative six months, the trilogy doesn't stop there. The subsequent books, After You and Still Me, take the reader beyond the immediate emotional impact of the first story. They explore the messy, nonlinear reality of what comes next.

In After You, we see a version of Lou who is struggling to keep a promise she made to live boldly. Grief is not tidy, and moving forward feels impossible when you are weighed down by the past. She finds herself in unchartered territory, dealing with unexpected family secrets, a support group that isn't quite what she expected, and the confusing nature of new relationships. It is a grounded look at how hard it is to actually start over when you are still hurting.

The final installment, Still Me, takes Lou out of her comfort zone entirely and drops her in New York City. Here, she navigates the world of the super-rich—reminiscent of Will’s old life—while trying to maintain who she is. She has to figure out if she can reinvent herself without losing the quirks that make her unique, all while managing a long-distance relationship.

What makes these books stand out is how they balance heavy themes with genuine warmth. Jojo Moyes doesn’t shy away from difficult questions about quality of life, depression, or social class, but she handles them with a light touch. Lou’s chaotic family and her disastrous fashion choices provide necessary levity even when the story gets dark. Ultimately, this series is a long-form character study, watching a timid young woman grow into a confident adult.
