Series background & context
McRae Bodyguards brings the McRae world back to the Highlands, but with a sharper romantic suspense angle. The series is set around the estate and the bodyguard service that grows there, giving Jolie Vines a way to keep the familiar family setting while telling stories that begin with immediate danger. These books are still very much romances, but the protect-and-hide setup is built right in.
Each novel follows a different bodyguard and heroine. In Touch Her and Die, Ben is thrown into a rescue that quickly turns into a road trip and a snowed-in refuge. Save Her from Me uses the classic brother's-best-friend tension. Take Her from You adds a single mother and a bodyguard roommate who does not believe in commitment. Keep Her from Them widens the scale with a rebellious princess and a security leak inside her own circle.
That variety helps the series feel fresh while staying true to its theme. The heroes are protective, but they are not all built the same way. Some are grumpy, some are easier company, some are carrying secrets that make them hold back. The heroines arrive in trouble, but they do not stay helpless. A big part of the series is watching them move from survival mode to something more active, often with a little revenge or justice mixed in.
The Highland setting gives these books a softer landing place than Vines' darker suspense series. There are safe houses, cabins, estate roads, bodyguard jobs, and plenty of cameos from the wider McRae crew. That means the books can handle real threat without losing the feeling of home. Even when someone is on the run, the world around them still has warmth.
The tone is more grounded than the Deadwater books and a touch easier to settle into than some of the mountain rescue stories. There is suspense, yes, but there is also humor, attraction, family interference, and the pleasure of watching guarded people slowly give up on pretending they are not attached. If you like protective heroes without wanting the very darkest kind of romance, this series sits in a nice middle ground.
You can read these books one by one, but the shared cast makes the order worthwhile. Ben, Jackson, Valentine, and Raphael are part of the same wider community, and seeing the estate fill up with more couples is part of the fun. For readers already attached to the McRae world, McRae Bodyguards feels like coming home, only with more danger at the gate.
