Author bio
McGarvey Black was born in New York City and grew up on Long Island. Before fiction took over, she pictured herself onstage. She studied voice at Manhattan School of Music, then earned a degree in speech and theater, with a minor in English, from Iona College.
For a while, acting looked like the whole plan.
She spent a few years performing and singing in a band before making a sharp turn into magazine and digital media. Her career ran through places like GQ and WebMD, where she sold advertising and led sales teams. It was busy, commercial work, and a long way from the quiet image people have of novelists.
Then came the kind of detour that sticks. In 1988, after meeting young travelers on a ski trip in Colorado, she quit her job, bought a round-the-world ticket, and spent about a year backpacking alone. That trip changed how she saw risk, reinvention, and story. Years later it fed straight into The First Husband, which grew from a couple she met in Delhi and never forgot.
She kept writing anyway.
Even while building a career and raising a family, she was saving scenes and half-finished ideas in documents on her computer. After moving to Wilton, Connecticut, with her husband and children, she changed lanes again and became an executive recruiter in the digital ad world. Working from home gave her more space to take her private writing life seriously. By around 2010, she had the beginnings of several novels. Getting one published took stubbornness. She has said she racked up 177 rejections before her debut finally found a publisher.
That debut was I Never Left in 2019, a suspense novel that lets murdered Quinn Roberts linger over the hunt for her killer. It helped set the pattern for much of what followed: everyday lives under pressure, buried truths, and people making very bad decisions for reasons they think make sense. Without Her Consent turns a hospital crisis into a criminal investigation. Trust Only Me follows a thriller writer whose fictional crimes begin happening in real life. In The Baby I Stole, the longing for a child leads to one split-second choice that changes everything.
She hasn't stayed in one lane, though. Love on the Line is a rom-com built around a phone call, a blackout, and an almost impossible search. A Familiar Stranger takes a more reflective route, following a man whose success has burned away nearly everything that mattered to him. Even when the genre shifts, her focus stays much the same: character first, then pressure.
Her process sounds practical. She likes to know the beginning and the end before she starts, then builds a long outline scene by scene. She has said she often writes in bed with her laptop on her lap and iced tea with lemon nearby. Ideas show up on bike rides, in everyday conversations, and sometimes in the middle of the night. She is married with two children, and she came to publication later than some writers do. That late start seems to suit her. Her books feel written by someone who has worked, traveled, raised kids, changed careers, and paid attention.
