Maurice Mundy Books in Order

The Maurice Mundy books begin with a strong setup. Maurice Mundy is a recently retired detective constable from the Metropolitan Police who comes back to join Scotland Yard's Cold Case Review Team. That alone gives the series a slightly different feel from Turnbull's other work. Instead of detectives meeting a fresh crime scene, the focus is on old evidence, stale assumptions, and the question of what everybody missed the first time.

Mundy is not presented as a polished grand detective. He is a maverick, awkward around authority, and quite capable of irritating the people around him. That is part of the appeal. He has experience, instincts, and a willingness to push where others would prefer a quieter life. The danger, of course, is that cold cases still involve living suspects, embarrassed institutions, and families who have spent years building fragile stories around what happened.

In A Cold Case, Mundy returns to review the murder of a twelve-year-old boy whose body was found in a pond ten years earlier. The reexamination soon picks up the nearby murder of a sex worker on the same night, and that in turn connects to a wider pattern of attacks being investigated by Essex Police as Operation Moonlight. The case gives Turnbull room to do what he does well, letting one fact lead to another until the picture becomes much larger and much more troubling.

The setting stretches between London and Essex, and the mood is different from the York or Glasgow series. This is less about a settled local squad and more about a man re-entering a system he knows well enough to distrust. The tone is still procedural, but the emphasis falls on review, comparison, and the friction between official caution and Mundy's appetite for risk.

Cold cases are never really cold.

Even though this strand of Turnbull's work is shorter than the others, the premise is easy to like. If you enjoy detectives who do not fit neatly back into the machine, and cases where old paperwork suddenly becomes dangerous again, Maurice Mundy is worth a look. Start with A Cold Case, because the whole point is watching Mundy come out of retirement and begin to stir the dust.
