Series background & context
The Matt Drake series is Don Bentley’s original thriller world. Its hero, Matt Drake, is a Defense Intelligence Agency case officer who knows how to run assets, survive a fight, and make bad jokes at the worst possible time. He is very good at his job, but the books never pretend that skill makes him bulletproof.
The series begins with Without Sanction, after a covert mission in Syria has gone badly wrong. Drake lives, but the cost follows him home. Three people are dead, his best friend Frodo is badly hurt, and Drake is stuck with the kind of guilt that does not care whether anyone else thinks he did his best. Then he is pulled back toward Syria when a Pakistani scientist tied to an ISIS splinter cell offers to defect with a deadly weapon.
That is the heart of the series: the mission is never just the mission.
Bentley builds Drake’s world around loyalty. His wife, Laila, is not just a name in the background. Frodo is not just the sidekick with a clever call sign. The people around Drake matter, which means the danger often cuts close to home. In The Outside Man, assassins attack Drake in broad daylight in Austin, Texas, and the wreckage of past operations lands on his doorstep. The hunt sends him back toward the Middle East and an enemy known as the Devil.
The later books keep widening the map while staying rooted in Drake’s personal debts. Hostile Intent takes him to Vienna, a city packed with intelligence officers, after a walk-in at the U.S. embassy asks for him by name and warns of a Russian operation. Forgotten War turns inward, testing Drake’s bond with Frodo when his closest friend is accused of a war crime from their Afghanistan years.
These are military and espionage thrillers, but they are not only about hardware, acronyms, or body counts. Bentley is interested in what happens after the operation, when the hero has to go home, look his family in the eye, and decide whether he can keep doing the work.
The tone is fast, gritty, and often funny in a dry way. Drake can be reckless, stubborn, and deeply loyal, sometimes all in the same scene. Readers who like Brad Taylor, Mark Greaney, or early post-9/11 military thrillers will recognize the territory, but Drake’s humor and emotional baggage give the series its own lane.
Start with Without Sanction. Each book has its own central crisis, but Drake’s relationships and scars carry forward, so the series is strongest in order.
