Masters at Arms Books in Order

The Masters at Arms books are among Jennifer Blake's richest historical series. Set in nineteenth-century New Orleans, they follow a circle of fencing masters and duelists, men who are polished in public, dangerous in private, and bound together by reputation, skill, and loyalty.

It is a great setup, and Blake knows it.

Beginning with Challenge to Honor and continuing through Dawn Encounter, Rogue's Salute, Guarded Heart, Gallant Match, and Triumph in Arms, the series uses old New Orleans society as both backdrop and engine. These men move through a world where class, family name, and public honor matter intensely. A duel can ruin a life or restore one. A whispered accusation can change a marriage prospect. A swordsman may be admired, feared, welcomed, and kept at arm's length all at once.

That tension gives the heroes their charge. Rio de Silva, Caid O'Neill, Nicholas Pasquale, Gavin Blackford, Kerr Wallace, and Christien Lenoir are not interchangeable. Some are worldly, some self-made, some haunted by the past. But all of them live by skill and nerve. Blake pairs them with women who are just as hard to dismiss, widows, heiresses, daughters in trouble, women trying to protect family, property, or dignity in a society that gives them limited room to act.

New Orleans matters here more than it would in a generic historical series. Blake uses its mixed culture, formal codes, and appetite for spectacle beautifully. Drawing rooms, dueling fields, river travel, candlelit lessons, and scandal all feel native to the setting.

The plots balance romance with real suspense. A threatened inheritance, a forced bargain, a dangerous escort, old rumors, or an inconvenient attraction can quickly turn deadly. So although the books are deeply romantic, they are never sleepy.

If you like Jennifer Blake at her most immersive, this is a standout series. It has history, pace, sensuality, and a strong sense of a city where elegance and violence can stand very close together.

Few settings suit her better.
