The Borrowers Aloft

by Mary Norton

1961

A model village seems to offer Pod, Homily and Arrietty a home built to their own scale. But the greedy Platters capture them, intending to exhibit the tiny family, and the Borrowers must devise an escape from confinement.

Poor Stainless

by Mary Norton

1966

Homily tells Arrietty about the days when many Borrowers lived in the house. Her recollection centres on Stainless, a little boy whose disappearance while borrowing parsley sets off a search among the tiny community hidden around the humans.

This collection follows Pod, Homily and Arrietty Clock through five adventures, beginning beneath the floor of an English house. Their struggle to remain hidden takes the tiny family into fields, along waterways and into homes threatened by human curiosity.

Are All the Giants Dead?

by Mary Norton

1975

James, an ordinary English boy, finds himself among fairy-tale figures whose adventures are supposedly finished. Helping Princess Dulcibel with a curse draws him into new trouble involving princes, witches and the question of whether any giants remain.

The Borrowers Avenged

by Mary Norton

1982

After escaping the Platters, Pod, Homily and Arrietty seek safety in an old rectory, where they encounter another Borrower. Their hopes of settling down are threatened by the persistent humans who still want to recapture the tiny family.

This adaptation of the film screenplay follows Pete Lender as he tries to protect his tiny friends from lawyer Ocious P. Potter. Faced with a determined human enemy, the Borrowers devise ingenious plans to keep themselves safe.

These fifteen stories follow upper-middle-class women living through the 1940s and early 1950s. Respectable appearances and dull marriages conceal dissatisfaction, as their protagonists seek opportunities to escape the social expectations and domestic constraints limiting their lives.
