Author bio
Mary Jo Putney was born in upstate New York and grew up in New York State with what she has called a reading addiction. At Syracuse University she studied English literature and industrial design, which is a nicely practical mix for someone who would later make a living imagining other people's lives and then building whole worlds around them.
Before she was a full-time novelist, she worked in design. She spent time in California and England, including editorial work in London, and eventually settled in the Baltimore area, where she ran a freelance graphic design business. Writing was the dream, but for a long time it felt more like fantasy than a plan.
Then a computer changed things.
Once she realized that a computer made writing easier, she plunged into a novel with more enthusiasm than caution. That first book sold quickly, and in 1987 The Diabolical Baron launched her fiction career. Not long after, she left design behind and committed to writing full time.
Her books are romance novels, but they rarely coast on charm alone. Again and again, she returns to bruised people, hard choices, and the slow work of trust. Readers who pick up The Rake often remember its story of addiction and recovery. The Fallen Angels books blend adventure, espionage, and wounded heroes trying to earn a better future. In Loving a Lost Lord and the rest of the Lost Lords series, she brings together childhood bonds, danger, and the sense that love can be both refuge and reckoning.
She also likes stretching the edges of what kind of romance she wants to write. The Silk books move through London, Central Asia, India, and Scotland. Under the name M.J. Putney, she has written fantasy romance such as A Kiss of Fate, where magic sits beside history instead of replacing it. More recently, books like Silver Lady show that she still enjoys mixing historical romance with a touch of the paranormal.
That range matters.
Across historical, contemporary, and fantasy stories, the same interests keep surfacing: outsiders trying to find home, people marked by grief or violence, and relationships that ask for courage as much as desire. Even when the settings are glamorous, from Regency ballrooms to distant trade routes, her characters usually have something real to survive. That mix of emotional weight and forward movement is a big part of why readers keep coming back.
Success followed in very plain, measurable ways. Her books have appeared on major bestseller lists, she has won two RITA Awards, for Dancing on the Wind and The Rake and the Reformer, and in 2013 she received the Nora Roberts Lifetime Achievement Award from Romance Writers of America. These days she lives near Baltimore, Maryland and continues to write across different corners of romance, with the same clear through line: wit, heart, and a real interest in what it takes for damaged people to build a life that finally feels like their own.
