Author bio
Mary Burton grew up in Richmond, Virginia, and she’s spent much of her life in the state she writes about so often. She started writing stories young, and that early curiosity about people and secrets still shows up on the page.
She studied English at Hollins University, then went into marketing. For years, writing was something she did around a day job, the kind of work that happens in the quiet hours when everyone else has gone to bed.
Then she decided to take the work seriously and see what happened.
Her first published novel arrived in 2000, and she kept building from there, book by book. Over time she found her lane in romantic suspense, stories where the stakes are high, the danger feels close, and the characters are dealing with more than just the case in front of them.
She’s also a big believer in getting the details right. She has trained with law enforcement through programs like the Henrico County Citizens Police Academy and the Richmond FBI Citizen’s Academy, and she has taken part in hands-on forensic education through Sisters in Crime. That research shows up in the way her investigators think, the small procedural steps they can’t skip, and the way one wrong assumption can get someone hurt.
Her books move fast, but the work behind them is careful.
A lot of her suspense novels are built around professions that force people to face the worst parts of a community: Texas Rangers, homicide detectives, profilers, and forensic specialists. Burton likes giving those characters a personal reason to stay on the case, a missing friend, a family loss, a past that won’t let go. Even when the plot travels, there’s often a sense of place that ties the stories together, Nashville, Richmond, Austin, small-town Virginia, or the wide-open pressure cooker of Montana.
If you start with titles like The Seventh Victim, The Shark, Senseless, Merciless, or Don't Look Now, you’ll see the mix that draws readers in: tight pacing, point-of-view shifts, and cases that connect to something personal. Her stories often circle around cold cases, family secrets, or a mistake from years ago that refuses to stay buried. The romance is there, but it usually grows out of two people trying to survive a bad week and learning who they can trust.
Burton also writes women’s fiction as Mary Ellen Taylor, a name she uses for more family- and place-driven stories. Books like The Union Street Bakery, At the Corner of King Street, Winter Cottage, The Words We Whisper, and After Paris lean into relationships, memory, and the way history can echo into the present. Even there, she’s still drawn to mysteries, old letters, and the kind of keepsake that changes what a character thinks they know.
Across both names, she likes settings that feel lived-in, from Virginia cities and small towns to coastal communities where everyone has a story. Her work has been recognized with nominations in genre awards, including RITA Award nominations for romantic suspense, and she has been a finalist for the Killer Nashville Silver Falchion Award. These days she calls Virginia home, travels for reader events and speaking engagements, and she and her husband spoil their dachshunds, Buddy, Bella, and Tiki.
