Author bio

Martin Edwards was born in Knutsford and grew up in Cheshire, a county that still feels close to his work. He studied law at Balliol College, Oxford, trained as a solicitor in Leeds, and moved to Liverpool after qualifying in 1980. That legal career became a major part of his life, but crime fiction was never far behind.

It started early.

Edwards has said that discovering Agatha Christie at the age of eight made him want not only to read mysteries, but to write them too. His parents sensibly encouraged him toward a proper job, and law turned out to be the compromise that stuck. In the 1980s he published legal articles and books, reviewed crime fiction, joined the Crime Writers' Association, and kept the writing ambition alive while building a demanding professional career.

That persistence paid off in 1990, when a competition win brought him his first published short story. A year later came All the Lonely People, the first Harry Devlin novel, which introduced a Liverpool solicitor with a habit of stumbling into murder. The book was nominated for the CWA John Creasey Memorial Dagger, and it set the tone for a lot of what followed, sharp plotting, a strong sense of place, and an interest in how private loyalties complicate the search for justice.

Then he changed scenery, not instincts.

With The Coffin Trail, Edwards moved into the Lake District and created DCI Hannah Scarlett and historian Daniel Kind, two characters linked by cold cases, buried family history, and the stubborn pull of the past. Later he turned to the 1930s for the Rachel Savernake books, beginning with Gallows Court, where Golden Age puzzle traditions meet darker, more gothic moods. Across those different series, one thing stays constant: setting matters. Liverpool, the Lakes, and interwar Britain are never just backdrops in his fiction.

His non-fiction has been just as important to many readers as his novels. The Golden Age of Murder won major awards on both sides of the Atlantic and helped introduce a wider audience to the Detection Club and the writers who shaped classic crime between the wars. Books such as The Story of Classic Crime in 100 Books, Howdunit, and The Life of Crime show the same qualities, deep reading, wide knowledge, and an ability to explain why old and new mysteries still work without sounding dusty or grand.

That matters.

Edwards has also played a big part behind the scenes. He has long been active in the Crime Writers' Association, served as President of the Detection Club, worked as archivist for both bodies, and became series consultant for the British Library Crime Classics. He has edited many anthologies as well, helping bring forgotten writers and stray gems back to readers who might never have found them otherwise.

Across fiction and non-fiction, his interests are easy to spot. He likes crimes with a history behind them, characters who are pulled between conscience and self-interest, and stories where motive matters as much as method. Lawyers, journalists, scholars, collectors, police officers, and amateur sleuths all have a place in his books, along with questions about reputation, memory, and the way the past keeps leaking into the present.

He lives in Lymm with his wife Helena, and he has continued to combine writing with part-time legal consultancy. It is a very Martin Edwards arrangement, practical on the surface, quietly obsessive underneath. Readers may come for the puzzle, but they tend to stay for the atmosphere, the intelligence, and the very human reasons his characters do what they do.
