Author bio
Markus Heitz was born in 1971 in the town of Homburg in south western Germany, and he has spent most of his life in that region. He writes fantasy, horror and science fiction, and is best known for turning dwarves and other supposed side characters into the heroes of sprawling sagas.
After finishing school at a Catholic private college in Homburg and completing his military service, Heitz studied German language and literature along with history at university. He first trained as a teacher, then switched to a master's track, spending years immersed in medieval chronicles, myths and classic German writing.
Before fiction became his day job he worked as a freelance journalist for a regional newspaper, filing articles while drafting stories at night. The world of Ulldart grew out of that period. His debut novel there, Schatten über Ulldart (Shadows over Ulldart), appeared in 2002 and won the German Fantasy Award in 2003, giving him the push to focus on novels full time.
That early recognition turned a side passion into a lasting career.
In 2003 he launched the book that would define his name, Die Zwerge, translated as The Dwarves. Instead of treating dwarves as comic relief, he put them at the center of an epic struggle for the realm of Girdlegard. The novel grew into a long running series that now stretches from the original quartet through later additions such as The Triumph of the Dwarves and The Return of the Dwarves, with a companion cycle, Legends of the Alfar, told from the viewpoint of the feared dark elves.
Beyond Girdlegard he has created other settings and tones. The Pact of Darkness universe links the werewolf duology Ritus and Sanctum with vampire focused novels and the standalone occult thriller Blutportale. Books such as Oneiros and The Dark Lands take place in versions of our own Europe, mixing crime scenes, historical research and supernatural forces while keeping his taste for fast pacing and brutal, physical confrontations.
He also likes to play with format and shared worlds. He wrote adventure gamebooks in which readers choose the path through Ulldart or the dwarven lands, contributed several novels to the Shadowrun role playing setting and penned a guest volume for the long running Perry Rhodan series. More recently he returned to branching storytelling in the Doors novels, where the same cave bound rescue mission splinters into very different realities depending on which mysterious door the characters step through.
Across all of this he favors clear prose, big emotions and stories that do not waste time getting to the next turning point.
Over the years Heitz has received the German Fantasy Award multiple times for different novels and cycles, and his books have sold in the millions in Germany alone. They have been translated into many languages, bringing his dwarves, dark elves, priests, hunters and demons to readers around the world. He still lives in Homburg in the German state of Saarland, once ran an Irish pub in the nearby city of Zweibrücken, and is a keen cook who sometimes tucks recipes for invented dishes into his books.
