Instead, the men parachute into a crisis, equipped for a drill while facing armed opponents and failing communications. The story narrows its focus to cold, exhaustion, scattered troops, and the basic problem of keeping people alive when the usual support system is gone.

The fourth novel, Breaking Ranks, changes the kind of battlefield without leaving Army life behind. Now a major working at the Pentagon, Isen is asked to examine the suspicious death of a young officer connected to the 82nd Airborne. The investigation leads him into questions of loyalty, reputation, careerism, and whether an institution can deal honestly with its own failures.

Across the books, Ruggero keeps the action close to the people doing the work. There are operations, weapons, and tactics, but the continuing tension comes from command: whom to trust, how much to reveal, and what a leader owes the people in their care. Expect brisk military suspense, practical details, and characters who must act before certainty arrives.
