Author bio

Marilyn Sadler was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and went on to become one of the best-known names in funny early reading. Her books have a dry, playful sense of humor that never talks down to kids. She now lives in Ohio.

At first, writing was not the plan. Sadler had a degree in fine arts and expected illustration to be her path, but an early chance to write changed that quickly. She took it, discovered she loved shaping the story as much as the pictures, and stayed with words.

Her first children's book introduced Alistair Grittle, a very proper boy genius who meets absurd situations with complete seriousness. That contrast became one of Sadler's signature comic moves. In books like Alistair's Elephant, Alistair in Outer Space, and Alistair's Time Machine, the world gets stranger and stranger, while Alistair stays focused on order, homework, and doing things the right way.

Then came P.J. Funnybunny, who may be her most lasting character on the page. In It's Not Easy Being a Bunny, P.J. tries on other identities before figuring out that being himself is not so bad after all. Sadler kept returning to the Funnybunny family in books like The Very Bad Bunny, Honey Bunny Funnybunny, and It's Better Being a Bunny, using sibling trouble, small disasters, and comic repetition to make very new readers feel at home.

She likes a character who can be a little ridiculous.

That same mix of silliness and straight-faced storytelling shows up in Elizabeth and Larry, a friendship story about an older woman and her alligator companion, and later in Charlie Piechart and the Case of the Missing Pizza Slice, which folds fractions into a mystery without feeling like homework. She has also written cheerful concept books such as Ten Eggs in a Nest and Tony Baroni Loves Macaroni, both built to be read aloud.

Another important branch of her work is Zenon: Girl of the Twenty-First Century. The original picture book and the later chapter books take ordinary kid feelings, boredom, curiosity, embarrassment, wanting more freedom, and place them on a space station full of gadgets, robot pets, and zero-gravity games. It is science fiction, but it is also very much about being a kid.

Space age setting, everyday problems.

Sadler's stories have had a long life off the page, too. P.J. Funnybunny appeared in ABC Weekend Specials, and Alistair turned up in Reading Rainbow programs and a BBC adaptation. Zenon later became a run of Disney Channel movies, which brought her work to a new generation of young viewers.

She also moved into television production. With Roger Bollen, Sadler co-created Handy Manny, the Disney preschool series about the helpful handyman and his talking tools. Her career has brought book honors such as the IRA Classroom Choice Award and the Parents' Choice Award, and in 2009 she received an Emmy nomination as an executive producer for Handy Manny.

What readers usually remember first is the tone. Sadler does not push the lesson too hard, and she rarely forgets the joke. Her books are built around rhythm, surprise, and characters who make mistakes in ways that feel funny, familiar, and very human, even when one of them happens to be an alligator.
