Author bio
Maria Grace has built a writing career around one very useful question: what if? What if Darcy really tried to live by his principles? What if Regency England had dragons? What if the parts of Jane Austen's world that modern readers rush past are exactly where the best stories begin?
She started early. In interviews, Grace has said she was writing poems and stories in third grade, helped along by a teacher who took her work seriously and encouraged her to keep going. By high school she had already written multiple novels and plenty of shorter pieces. Those early manuscripts still exist, tucked away in a box somewhere, which feels very on brand for a writer who clearly never stopped making things up.
Then life took the scenic route.
Grace's academic background is broad, practical, and a little unexpected for a historical novelist. Her undergraduate studies ranged across economics, sociology, managerial studies, and behavioral sciences, and she later earned a PhD in Educational Psychology. Before fiction became her full-time work, she spent sixteen years teaching in the university classroom, covering subjects like human growth and development, learning, counseling, and test development.
That mix of curiosity and structure still shows in her books.
Her path into Jane Austen came later than some readers might guess. Grace has said that Emma Thompson's film of Sense and Sensibility pulled her into Austen fandom in the mid-1990s. From there she read the novels, explored fan communities, and eventually started asking her own what if questions. That led to Austen-inspired fiction such as the Given Good Principles books, the Christmas-centered Darcy stories, and standalones like Remember the Past and Fine Eyes and Pert Opinions.
Then came dragons.
With Pemberley, the opening novel in Jane Austen's Dragons, Grace pushed her Austen work in a very different direction. The series folds dragons, Keepers, treaties, and Blue Order politics into Regency England, but it still keeps one foot planted in family life, social pressure, and slow-burning romance. As the series grows, it moves beyond Darcy and Elizabeth to bring in Anne Elliot, Captain Wentworth, Georgiana Darcy, and later Margaret Dashwood. Readers who click with Grace's work often like that blend of emotional familiarity and increasingly ambitious worldbuilding.
She also writes nonfiction for readers who want the real history behind the fiction. Courtship and Marriage in Jane Austen's World, A Jane Austen Christmas, and How Jane Austen Kept Her Cool all show the same habits that shape her novels, deep research, a fondness for old customs, and a knack for explaining them in plain English.
These days, Grace writes historical romance, gaslamp fantasy, and nonfiction, and she has described it all as a handy excuse for a research addiction. She blogs regularly, loves cats, and jokes that her vacations often involve helmets, waivers, or historical costumes. It is a small detail, but a telling one.
If there is a thread running through her work, it is this: she likes to take a familiar world, look at it from a fresh angle, and follow the consequences honestly. Sometimes that leads to a quiet romance. Sometimes it leads to a dragon.
