Author bio

Mande Matthews was born in Colville, Washington, and she has described herself as a dreamy kid who loved art, music, mythology, and misfits. Fantasy hooked her early too. At thirteen, her brother handed her Terry Brooks's The Sword of Shannara, and that sense of magic and possibility stayed with her.

That early pull never really left.

After high school, she went to music performance school, even though, by her own account, the stage was not her natural habitat. She spent long hours in libraries in Boston and later New York City, where she discovered Joseph Campbell's Masks of God. That meeting point between myth and fantasy became a turning point, and eventually the seed of the worlds she wanted to build for readers.

Her path to fiction was not a straight line. She worked as a receptionist at an advertising agency on Park Avenue, tried screenwriting, and kept circling back to story while life kept sending detours. She has said her years in Los Angeles were hard ones, and that experience sharpened her interest in female strength, survival, and characters who refuse to stay powerless.

She came back to writing the long way around.

When she finally returned to novel writing in earnest, fantasy was the form that fit. The big breakthrough was the ShadowLight world, which she had been carrying in earlier form for years before bringing it back and reshaping it for publication. That became The Light Keepers, Bonded, Broken, and later Shadow Born, books that mix Norse-inspired worldbuilding, shadowy magic, romance, and a strong sense that inner struggles matter just as much as sword fights.

Readers who like her work often talk about the same things. They like the emotional pull in Bonded and Broken, the myth-heavy setup of The Light Keepers, and the way Shadow Born opens a side path through the same dangerous world. Others come to Matthews through Betrothal and Quest, her Arthurian retelling told through a young Guinevere, or through Tooth Sleuth, which shows she can also write a lighter, funny mystery for younger readers.

Across genres, certain ideas keep showing up. Matthews writes about young people discovering strange power before they fully understand it, about duty pulling against desire, and about what sits between darkness and light instead of at either extreme. Her books often pair magic with emotional pressure, and they regularly make room for girls and women who have to learn their own strength the hard way.

She has also long described herself as a hermit at heart, happiest disappearing into imagination and then resurfacing to real life with her husband and a lively collection of animal companions. These days, her creative world appears broader than novels alone. Alongside fantasy and romance, she also shares short fiction, poetry, and visual art, which fits a writer whose work has always treated myth, image, and feeling as parts of the same spell.
