Man of Conflict Books in Order

Man of Conflict begins with Septimus Pearce, the youngest son of a wealthy English merchant. He is spoiled, badly behaved, and a threat to the family name. His father decides the Army may reform him, or at least remove the problem from polite view.

It does not reform him neatly.

In The Soldier Brat, Septimus sees bloody action in three countries, but the discipline of army life does not erase his worst traits. That makes the series sharper than a simple coming-of-age tale. Wareham follows a man who can learn the skills of war without becoming gentle, and perhaps without becoming good.

The books move through military campaigns and imperial trouble spots, including India and the wider world of British conflict. Rank, family money, social embarrassment, and ambition all matter. Septimus is privileged enough to be protected, but not so secure that he can avoid consequences forever.

This series is for readers who like flawed protagonists. Septimus can be capable, brave, and useful, while still being difficult company. Wareham does not sand him down into an easy hero. The pleasure comes from watching how a man with ugly impulses functions in a world that often rewards force, nerve, and selfishness.

Read The Soldier Brat first, then continue with Raging Rajahs, Fire and Folly, Blood and Famine, Spanish Tricks, and A Soldier’s Farewell. The order matters because Septimus’s reputation, opportunities, and failures build from book to book. It is a shorter military sequence, but not a soft one.
