Major Bricket finds an unidentified man dressed as a clergyman dead beneath the village church’s bell tower. While neighbors focus on ordinary parish concerns, he turns to trusted friends and skills from his secretive career to investigate the death.

Series background & context

The Major Bricket Mysteries follow a retired man whose neighbors know less about his working life than they would like. Simon Brett sets the series in Stunston Peveril, a Suffolk village where local occasions and gossip provide the familiar surface of everyday life. Major Bricket has spent much of his career away on assignments, often abroad. Retirement brings him back to Highfield House, but a quiet return home is soon interrupted by a death.

Major Bricket and the Circus Corpse introduces him arriving in his little red sports car to discover a body on his lawn. The corpse is dressed as a clown. Since a circus has come to the village for its annual fair, that seems to offer an obvious starting point, yet none of its clowns appears to be missing. The possibility of a connection to the Fincham Abbey Costume Ball gives the Major another reason to look beyond the first explanation.

His past makes him better equipped for detection than the village may realize.

The mystery surrounding his former occupation is part of the series' appeal. Bricket is not simply a newcomer who happens to notice something the police have missed. A clandestine career has given him skills he can bring to the problems appearing close to home. At the same time, he has to operate in a village where people have their own priorities, assumptions and reasons to talk. What neighbors reveal while discussing ordinary matters may be as useful as anything presented as an important clue.

Major Bricket and the Body in the Bell Tower takes him to another central village institution: the church. After a Sunday service, an open door draws his attention to the bell tower, where he finds a dead man at the bottom of the stairs. The stranger is wearing a clerical collar, but his identity is uncertain. Bricket must ask who he was and whether someone nearby could have killed him. His friends Nga Luong and Rod help as he draws on the habits of investigation developed before retirement.

These are cozy whodunits with a humorous eye for a community that can remain absorbed in its own routines even when a corpse appears. The Suffolk setting brings suspects, gossip and social events into close proximity, while Bricket's background gives the sleuthing an extra resource. Start with Major Bricket and the Circus Corpse, then continue with Major Bricket and the Body in the Bell Tower. The cases introduce different puzzles, connected by the retired Major's life in Stunston Peveril and the contrast between the village's peaceful appearance and the deaths he finds within it.
