Mags Rogers Books in Order

The lead is Magdalene Mags Rogers, a former Wall Street professional who leaves finance behind and lands at her great-aunt Jeep Reed's ranch, trying to rebuild her life after a hard personal and professional shake-up.

Mags does not arrive alone. Her wirehaired dachshund Baxter comes with her, and like many Brown books, the animals matter. Baxter does not instantly get along with Jeep's dog King, which gives the series some comic spark right away. The dogs are not window dressing. They are part of the emotional center and part of the way Brown keeps the mysteries moving.

The setting also changes the stakes. These books are interested in land, water, property, and the fallout from financial greed. A Nose for Justice opens with sabotage at a pumping station and murders tied to local history and development. Murder Unleashed leans into the damage left by the foreclosure crisis, as families are pushed into desperate conditions and corruption reaches from banking to politics.

That broader social angle gives the series a slightly tougher edge than Brown's coziest work.

Still, the appeal is familiar if you already like her. Mags is smart, practical, and curious. Jeep is colorful and capable. Deputy Pete Meadows brings both investigative muscle and personal tension. The ranch setting adds room, weather, animals, and a western atmosphere without losing Brown's interest in community and human foolishness.

Start with A Nose for Justice, because it sets up Mags, Baxter, Jeep, Pete, and the world they move through. Then go to Murder Unleashed for a stronger sense of what Brown wants this series to do, which is mix canny mystery plotting with questions about money, power, and what happens when ordinary people are left to deal with the wreckage.

These are good picks if you want Brown's love of animals and local knowledge, but with dogs in the foreground and Nevada replacing Virginia.
