Magic Time Books in Order

The Magic Time books are a collaborative trilogy, and they feel different from Robert Charles Wilson's solo science fiction. This is post-apocalyptic fantasy set in a version of modern America where a government experiment called the Source breaks reality. Electricity dies, machines fail, and magic floods back into the world.

Around Cal is a ragged, memorable group of fellow travelers: the tough Colleen Brooks, the doctor Lysenko, the unstable but useful Goldie, and the terrifyingly transformed Ely Stern, who begins as Cal's boss and turns into one of the trilogy's strangest figures. The series likes misfit parties, uneasy alliances, and characters who have to figure out what parts of themselves are worth carrying into the new world.

The first two books, Magic Time and Angelfire, build the broken landscape and send Cal's group across a country where myth and nightmare are now practical facts. Ghostlands, the volume Wilson co-wrote, pushes the quest toward the Source itself. By then the books are operating as dark fantasy adventure, with the road west full of ruins, revelations, and places where memory is as dangerous as magic.

Readers should expect a broader, pulpier rhythm than in the Spin books. The appeal here is the collision of contemporary America with folklore, dream logic, and transformed identity. If you like stories where the world ends not in ash but in enchantment, and where a battered band of survivors has to cross a frightening new landscape to find answers, Magic Time leans hard into that chaos.
