The Looters

by Harold Robbins

2007

Madison Dupre, an ambitious New York art curator, lands a career‑making coup by acquiring a legendary Babylonian death mask. When an Iraqi man claims it was stolen from Baghdads museum and winds up dead, Madison becomes the prime suspect and must run to prove her innocence.

Series background & context

The Madison Dupre novels are late‑period entries in the Harold Robbins universe, written by Junius Podrug in collaboration with the Robbins estate. They keep the trademark mix of sex, money, and danger but move the action into the rarefied, often corrupt world of antiquities and high‑end art.

Madison Dupre is not a traditional heroine. She is ambitious, image‑conscious, and willing to cut corners to get ahead as a curator and art consultant. The first book, The Looters, finds her at New Yorks small but prestigious Piedmont Museum, where she lands what looks like a career‑making coup: the acquisition of a legendary Babylonian death mask known for its curse and its price tag.

Her triumph lasts only until an Iraqi man crashes the unveiling and claims the mask was stolen from his countrys national museum during the chaos of war. When he turns up dead and evidence points at Madison, she realises she has been set up. The chase that follows takes her through the incestuous world of collectors, dealers, and politicians who treat ancient treasures as poker chips.

In The Deceivers, Madison is scrambling to rebuild her reputation as a freelance expert when a Thai food delivery turns out to be a smuggled Khmer sculpture from Angkor Wat. The piece drags her into a web of temple robbers, corrupt officials, and undercover cops across Cambodia, Hong Kong, and Thailand. The stakes are higher than just a ruined career; people around her are dying for the chance to carve up the past and sell it.

The Shroud pushes things even further. Madison is offered a fat payday to fly to Dubai and evaluate an artefact that may have been buried with Christ. The offer comes from a man she thought was dead and whom she hates, and every instinct tells her the job is a trap. Still, debts and pressure force her to accept, pulling her into a conspiracy that runs through ancient Mesopotamian ruins, Istanbul back alleys, Venetian canals, and a jealously guarded European cathedral.

Later books continue the pattern: a single artefact with a shocking backstory, a trail of bodies, and Madison trying to stay one step ahead of law enforcement, criminals, and wealthy clients who think they can buy anything. The tone is fast and sometimes outrageous, with a heroine who is often selfish and abrasive but resourceful enough to survive in a world where beauty, history, and greed collide.
