Author bio

Maddie Day is the pen name that mystery author Edith Maxwell uses when she is writing about food, family, and small town crime. Under both names she has built a patchwork of cozy, traditional, and historical mysteries set in the places she knows best, from California wine country to rural Indiana and the salt air streets of Cape Cod.

Behind that pen name is a writer who has lived many different lives.

Maxwell grew up near Los Angeles, a fourth generation Californian who was already writing stories as a child. At nine she won a local newspaper contest with a short adventure tale, then kept scribbling through school even as her interests tilted toward language and how people use it.

She studied linguistics at the University of California, Irvine, and went on to earn a PhD in the field from Indiana University. Along the way she spent a year in Brazil as an exchange student, lived in Japan teaching conversational English, and later worked in West Africa. Those moves gave her an ear for different voices and a feel for what it means to arrive in a new place and learn its rhythms.

Before turning to fiction full time, Maxwell held an unusually wide range of jobs. She worked as an auto mechanic, taught independent childbirth classes, ran a small certified organic farm, and eventually settled into technical writing for software companies north of Boston. Each role left traces in her books, whether it is the way a character handles a tool, the knowledge of how a CSA farm actually operates, or the calm presence of a midwife at the center of a crisis.

In the 1990s she began publishing short crime fiction, and her first mystery novel appeared in 2012. By 2013 she had left the tech world to write full time. She is a lifetime member of Sisters in Crime, belongs to Mystery Writers of America, and continues to be active in the Quaker community, all of which feed her interest in justice that feels both humane and believable.

As Maddie Day she writes the long running Country Store Mysteries, following chef and carpenter Robbie Jordan at Pans 'N Pancakes in fictional South Lick, Indiana. The Cozy Capers Book Group Mysteries bring readers to a Cape Cod bike shop and a crime reading book club that keeps stumbling over real bodies. Her newer Cece Barton Mysteries are set in Sonoma County's Alexander Valley, where widowed single mom Cece runs a wine bar while navigating wildfires, local politics, and a cautious new romance.

Writing as Edith Maxwell, she turns to historical and more traditional mysteries. The Quaker Midwife Mysteries follow midwife Rose Carroll through 1880s Amesbury, Massachusetts, weaving real local history together with invented crimes. The Local Foods Mysteries take place on an organic farm north of Boston, and the Lauren Rousseau novels draw on her academic life. One of the Quaker Midwife titles, Charity's Burden, won the Agatha Award for Best Historical Novel, and several others have been finalists.

What links them all is a steady interest in ordinary people doing their best in difficult moments.

She now lives in an antique house in Amesbury, Massachusetts, with her partner and their cat, Martin. Her two grown sons are out in the world, but they remain part of the extended family web that shows up in so many of her stories. When she is not writing, she gardens, cooks, and keeps up with readers through newsletters, events, and group blogs with other mystery authors.

For readers, the Maddie Day name signals warm communities, hearty food, and puzzles that reward close attention without leaving you bleak. Whether you start with Flipped for Murder, Murder on Cape Cod, Murder Uncorked, or one of her historical novels, you are stepping into a world where place matters, friendships deepen over time, and justice, however imperfect, is worth working for.
