Series background & context
The Mack Bedford books shift the focus from Washington strategy rooms to the mud and dust around special operations units. Mackenzie 'Mack' Bedford is a decorated U.S. Navy SEAL commander, stubborn, skilled and not always willing to play by the rules when his men are at risk.
Diamondhead sets the tone. Mack’s platoon is wiped out in Iraq by a new anti tank missile, and his furious response gets him forced out of the Navy. At the same time his young son needs an experimental and very expensive medical treatment, giving every mission that follows a personal edge.
In Intercept, Mack is pulled back into the shadows. Four hardened terrorists are freed from Guantanamo on a legal technicality and disappear into the mountains along the Afghan border. Intelligence intercepts hint at a major attack, and Mack is offered reinstatement if he can quietly track them down with no official fingerprints.
The Delta Solution moves offshore to the Indian Ocean, where heavily armed Somali pirates styling themselves the Somali Marines hijack cargo ships and even American vessels. Mack assembles Delta Platoon, an elite SEAL team tasked with destroying pirate bases and freeing hostages in a series of dangerous sea and shore raids.
By Power Play the stakes reach a new level. Set in a near future nuclear standoff, the story follows a Russian plan to combine cyber warfare with a missile strike on America’s command systems. Working alongside a Mossad spymaster, Mack has to stop a freighter carrying nuclear tipped missiles before they can be used against the United States.
Throughout the series Robinson mixes real world technology and headlines with the close knit life of a SEAL platoon. The books balance briefing room scenes with training ranges, desert firefights and boarding actions at sea. For many readers the best approach is to start with Diamondhead and continue through the four book arc as Mack’s career, family and reputation rise and fall with each mission.
