Author bio

Lynnette Bonner was born in Mzuzu, Malawi, the daughter of missionaries who made their home in what is often called the warm heart of Africa. Her earliest memories are of red dirt roads, wide African skies, and neighborhood games played in more than one language.

At eight years old she left home for Rift Valley Academy in Kenya, a boarding school tucked into the hills above the Rift Valley. School there meant dorm life, close friendships, and long stretches away from her parents. It also meant learning to move between cultures, to feel at home both in chapel and in the open African countryside.

After graduating in 1990 she moved halfway around the world to Kirkland, Washington, to attend Northwest University. The shift from African villages to Pacific Northwest traffic and rain was a shock. There are stories of her checking which side of the road to drive on more than once, and of the long slow work of feeling at home in yet another place.

College is also where she met Marty, a redheaded Idaho native who loved small towns and the outdoors. Friendship turned into something more, and the two married in the early 1990s. A few years later they moved to the tiny logging town of Pierce, Idaho, where Marty stepped into ministry and Lynnette began digging into local history.

Those Idaho years eventually became the soil for her first historical western series, Rocky Mountain Oasis kicking off The Shepherd's Heart books. Set in the Idaho Territory and Oregon in the late 1800s, the series follows mail order brides, ranchers, and lawmen who have to face both outlaws and their own pasts. The stories lean into themes that run through much of her work, like courage, forgiveness, and the hard work of learning to trust again.

From there her writing world widened. With the Wyldhaven novels she imagined a frontier town where a schoolteacher, a weary sheriff, a stubborn marshal, and a handful of determined women keep crossing paths. In Sonnets of the Spice Isle she returned to an African setting, following RyAnne Hunter and Captain Trent Dawson through East Africa in the 1860s as they confront the slave trade and wrestle with calling and love. More recently the Oregon Promise series has taken readers onto the Oregon Trail with characters who are fleeing abuse, grieving deep losses, and still somehow daring to hope for a new start.

Lynnette also writes contemporary small town stories. The Pacific Shores books, beginning with Beyond the Waves, follow a circle of friends in a coastal community as they deal with bullying, old hurts, single parenting, and fresh faith. The Riversong series centers on a tiny Washington town where an injured NFL quarterback, an overworked innkeeper, a rock climber, and an exhausted caregiver all have to decide what to do with grace when it finally finds them. In Hearts of Hollywood novellas and in romantic suspense like The Unrelenting Tide, Fire, and Ice, she lets cameras, fame, and danger brush up against very ordinary questions about trust and identity.

Across genres her stories share a few trademarks. Communities matter, and side characters are given space to grow over several books. Hard topics like abuse, addiction, slavery, and grief are not avoided, but they are handled with a steady eye on hope rather than shock value. Romance is important, but so is the slow, often painful process of spiritual growth.

Today Lynnette and Marty live in Washington State, where he pastors a church and she writes from home. They have four grown children and a granddaughter who shows up often in her social media snapshots. When she is not drafting another chapter, she might be reading, walking in the rain, or daydreaming new stories that weave together frontier grit, small town quirks, and the quiet persistence of grace.

Again and again, her books circle back to the same idea. No matter how wild the West, how deep the ocean, or how dark the shadows, God has not forgotten the people who walk there.
