Author bio

Lynn Kurland started telling stories absurdly early. At five, while living in Hawaii, she was already writing and illustrating a homemade run of novellas called Clinton's Troubles. Even then, she liked throwing her hero into impossible situations and seeing how he might scramble free.

Then life tugged her in a different direction. After her family returned to the mainland, writing gave way to serious classical music study, and for a while operas mattered more than manuscripts. She has written about high school years spent somewhere between Verdi, Rossini, Tolkien, Barbara Cartland, and Mad Magazine, which actually explains a lot about the blend of romance, humor, and old-world atmosphere in her books.

College changed the plan.

A chance encounter with a stack of romance novels in the library sent her back to the page. She has said, in essence, that she wanted fantasy with a real love story at the center, so she started trying to write the kind of book she wanted to read. Her first published novel, Stardust of Yesterday, arrived in 1996, won two RITA Awards, and kicked off the long, connected story world many readers now think of as classic Kurland.

If you know her work, you probably know the families first. The de Piagets, the MacLeods, and their many cousins, ghosts, and time-lost visitors keep crossing paths from book to book. A Dance Through Time is one of her signature Highland time-travel romances. This Is All I Ask shows her more grounded medieval side. The More I See You and Stars in Your Eyes lean into cross-century romance. And Star of the Morning opens the door to her larger fantasy setting, the Nine Kingdoms.

She likes a love story, and she doesn't hide it.

What readers tend to enjoy about Kurland is the mix. There are haunted castles, stubborn knights, practical modern heroines, magical swords, ghostly meddlers, and enough danger to keep things moving. Even when the setup is wild, a woman inherits a castle and its resident ghost, or a mage is trying very hard not to be evil, the emotional center stays recognizable. Her books keep circling back to loyalty, second chances, family obligations, home, and people who have to learn how to trust before they can love.

Music never really left, either. She has talked about still playing piano for various things, occasionally playing cello in a quartet, and singing in public when she gets the chance. That background may help explain why her books often feel carefully paced even when they are full of portals, spells, and very inconvenient ghosts.

Her public bios place her in the Pacific Northwest with her family, still writing historical romance, time travel, and fantasy after decades in print. Another RITA followed for the novella To Kiss in the Shadows, and her books have appeared on bestseller lists at The New York Times and USA Today. It is a long career, but it also feels unusually consistent. She found the lane she loved, castles, magic, family webs, and earnest romance, and she has kept building it book by book.
