Author bio
Lynda Wilcox was born in Derbyshire, and reading seems to have been part of life early. As a child she tore through adventure stories, and the first piece she saw in print was a poem in her school magazine. That mix of curiosity and playfulness still feels close to her books.
In her twenties she wrote pantomime scripts for amateur dramatic groups. She was also one of the founders of The Facts of Life, a four-person comedy team that wrote and performed sketches for radio. Long before she was writing murders, she was learning timing, voice, and how to land a punchline.
She now writes fantasy adventures for older children and funny whodunits for adults.
Her adult mysteries are probably the easiest place to start. Strictly Murder introduces Verity Long, a personal assistant whose sharp eye and inability to let things go keep pulling her into trouble. Across the Verity books, readers tend to come for the murders and stay for the mix of gossip, food, wine, awkward work lives, and dry humor.
She later moved into historical crime with A Poisoning In Piccadilly, the first Lady Eleanor novel. That series follows Lady Eleanor Bakewell through 1920s London, where private enquiry work, theatre boxes, house parties, and the occasional brush with Military Intelligence make life much more complicated than it ought to be. The books are brisk, lightly funny, and fond of clever women who refuse to sit still.
Wilcox's range is a little wider than cozy crime alone. Murder by Request gives her a cat-rescuing Cotswolds vicar as sleuth, while The Lockington Legacy pairs twin detectives with a stolen necklace and a country-house puzzle. For younger readers, The Secret Spy, The Dragon Key, and Time Walker follow Kel, a boy with a rare talent for disappearing into any background, through a fantasy world of kings, spies, and dangerous missions.
She lives in a small town in England with her supportive husband and four ageing computers.
Her own author notes make her sound pleasantly unromantic about domestic perfection. She likes pottering in the garden, even when it means sharing space with brambles, bindweed, nettles, roses, lilies, and slugs. She also reads a lot, enjoys good food and wine, and seems perfectly happy with the idea that writing is a very good excuse for not doing the housework.
That everyday tone helps explain the appeal of her fiction. Even when the plot involves a poisoned millionaire, a dead celebrity, or a spy mission into enemy territory, the people at the center of the story still feel approachable. They worry, joke, get things wrong, and keep going. That makes Wilcox's books easy to slip into and pleasantly hard to put down.
