Author bio
Lyn Cote was born in Texas, grew up in Illinois along Lake Michigan, and fell in love with books early. Friday nights mattered because that was when the Bookmobile came to her neighborhood, and choosing which six books to bring home felt like the biggest decision in the world.
That reading habit stuck.
She read history, loved stories about strong women, and started writing poems young enough to win prizes in high school and college. She later earned a bachelor's degree in education and a master's degree in American history from Western Illinois University, then taught English and history.
Writing fiction came a little later. When she became a mother, she left teaching, stayed home with her son and daughter, and started working on novels during the busy years of family life. She wrote for years before getting the call that changed everything. Her first novel, Never Alone, was chosen for the first year of the Love Inspired line, and it was published in 1998.
A lot of Cote's fiction shows what she likes best as a reader too, women under pressure, families in trouble, and love that has to be earned. She writes contemporary romance, romantic suspense, and historical fiction, but the thread running through them is usually the same. Somebody has to be brave.
You can see that in books like Whispers of Love, which ties romance to the Great Chicago Fire, Winter's Secret, a small-town mystery set in snowy Wisconsin, and Honor, which follows a Quaker woman pulled into abolition work. In Chloe, one of her best-known historicals and a RITA finalist, she begins a four-generation family story that later continued in revised form in the Carlyle novels.
She also likes places that feel lived in. Her Wisconsin suspense books make room for weather, town gossip, and ordinary work, while her historical series move through early America, Texas, and the years after the Civil War. Again and again, she returns to faith, forgiveness, family strain, and the way love can grow in hard ground.
That mix helped her build a long career.
Cote has written nearly fifty books, been a Romance Writers of America RITA finalist, and won a Carol Award. She has also written articles on writing and on the Christian fiction market. These days she lives with her husband in northern Wisconsin, near the water that often finds its way into her stories. She still writes what she calls strong women, brave stories, and that phrase fits. Her heroines do not wait around to be rescued. They pray, doubt, work, fail, try again, and keep going.
