Author bio

Lyle Nicholson was born in British Columbia, Canada, and grew up in a home where reading mattered. He has said his first pull toward writing came from that early love of books and from parents who were readers themselves. Before he ever wrote novels, he was already the kind of person who collected stories from people, places, and odd turns in life.

After his father died, Nicholson headed out at 18 on a long stretch of travel and searching. He spent time in Europe, lived on a kibbutz in Israel, and appeared in Gospel Road: A Story of Jesus, the 1973 film written by Johnny Cash and Larry Murray. It is not the usual opening chapter for a mystery writer, which may be part of the point.

He did not take a straight road to fiction.

In the 1970s he lived a restless, curious life that included time as a hippie and several years in a yoga monastery. Later he married, tried working for other people with mixed results, and eventually built his own successful sales agency. That move gave him independence, and it also gave him a lot more road time.

Much of that work was in sales tied to corporate security and oilfield safety. Nicholson traveled across Canada, the United States, Europe, and Alaska's far north, seeing places most people only hear about and spending time in settings that would later show up in his books. The long northern trips mattered especially. The Arctic atmosphere in Polar Bear Dawn did not come out of nowhere.

He retired in 2011, and retirement quickly became a second career. Nicholson had already written freelance pieces for Canadian newspapers and magazines, but fiction was the thing that had been waiting in the background. He has described stories bouncing around in his head for years, on the road and even during meditation, until he finally had the time to sit down and chase them properly.

That background helps explain why the Bernadette Callahan books feel so mobile and so rooted in place. Polar Bear Dawn introduces RCMP detective Bernadette Callahan, an Irish and Cree investigator whose instincts often put her at odds with superiors, in a case that stretches from northern Canada to Alaska. Pipeline Killers and Climate Killers mix police procedure with corporate secrecy, science, and environmental risk. In Caught In The Crossfire, Bernadette is pushed into Afghanistan, while Deadly Ancestors brings family history and Irish folklore into the investigation.

He likes mysteries that move.

Nicholson also writes outside the series. Misdiagnosis... Murder is a stand-alone mystery built around a vanished doctor and a fortune given away too soon. Dolphin Dreams leans romantic and surreal, following a worn-down professor into stranger territory. Half Brother Blues is especially personal, a search through family secrets that reads with the forward pull of a detective story.

Across his work, certain interests keep returning. He writes about people under pressure, institutions that want easy answers, and characters who keep digging when they are told to stop. Readers who like women detectives, cold-weather settings, international travel, and cases that grow larger than they first appear usually find plenty to grab onto here.

These days Nicholson lives in Kelowna, British Columbia, with his wife. He has said he enjoys writing, cooking, and fine wine, which sounds like a pretty good later chapter for someone whose path to authorship included monasteries, sales calls, Arctic travel, and a Johnny Cash movie.
