On Lucky Shores / Finding Home

by Kerry J Donovan

2016

Drifting street musician Chet Walker carries a dying man's cryptic message into the lakeside Colorado town of Lucky Shores. There he clashes with wary diner owner Josie Donoghue and a community full of secrets, uncovering a decades-old mystery tied to her family and his own past.

Series background & context

At the heart of the Lucky Shores series is Chet Walker, a drifter with a guitar and more baggage than he wants to admit. When readers first meet him in Finding Home he is a street musician travelling the back roads of Colorado, following a dying man's wish to deliver a message to a stranger in a lakeside town called Lucky Shores.

The town Chet stumbles into looks picturesque from a distance, all water views and mountain air, but it is thick with grudges and long memories. Josie Donoghue, who runs the local diner, wants nothing to do with the scruffy outsider who shows up on her doorstep claiming to know something about her late father. As Chet and Josie circle each other, Donovan uses their clash to peel back Lucky Shores' biggest unsolved mystery and the secrets that have shaped Josie's life.

Over the series, that reluctant partnership turns into something deeper. Chet stops drifting and starts putting down roots, trading busking for the long, exhausting climb through medical school. Josie, who has built her world around keeping control of her diner and her past, has to decide whether to trust someone whose first instinct used to be to run. Their story brings together opposites, but it always treats their choices as hard-won rather than easy wish fulfilment.

Each novel adds fresh threats to that fragile new life. In The Long Road Home Chet's quick decision to help a stranger at a roadside diner pulls him into a dangerous feud and forces him to balance his oath as a doctor with his promise to Josie. Home For Good finds the couple on the verge of settling back in Lucky Shores, only to be diverted into the mountains by a traumatised veteran and a crime scene that demands their help.

Lucky Shores itself is more than a backdrop. The rugged terrain of the Rockies, sudden storms, winding back roads, and isolated cabins all play a part in the suspense. At the same time, the town's regulars, from the guarded sheriff to loyal friends and prickly neighbours, give the series a cosy, lived-in texture. Danger may arrive from outside, but it always lands in a community that feels real.

In tone, these books sit comfortably between romantic suspense and small-town drama. There are gunshots, kidnappings, and moral choices that hurt, yet there is also warmth, humour, good coffee, and the slow building of a chosen family. Readers who follow the series in order can watch Chet and Josie move from wary strangers to partners in every sense, facing down whatever the Colorado weather and fate choose to throw at them.
