Series background & context
Richard Kadrey joined an existing comics legacy when he stepped in to write Lucifer, a spin off of the original Sandman comics. This version of Lucifer Morningstar is the familiar fallen angel who once ruled Hell and walked away from the throne, trying to carve out some kind of life that belongs to him rather than to Heaven’s plans.
In Lucifer Vol 3: Blood in the Streets, the Devil is running a Los Angeles nightclub called Ex Lux and is still recovering from a bruising encounter with God Himself. The volume collects issues that swing between holiday mischief and large scale metaphysical trouble. Readers see Lucifer drifting through the streets of Los Angeles, crossing into the underworld, and navigating his own mind as he confronts old enemies and new responsibilities.
The central threat involves a new entity moving in on the empty throne of Heaven. Someone has stepped into the space left by a departed deity and is preparing to clamp down on free will across creation. Lucifer, who values his contrary streak above anything, gathers a motley assortment of angels, demons, and mortals in an attempt to keep that from happening, even if it means bleeding for a realm he claims not to care about.
Kadrey’s background in urban fantasy and supernatural noir fits the character well. His Lucifer is wry, stubborn, and very aware of his own flaws. The story bounces between cosmic stakes and intimate moments in back rooms and alleyways, keeping the focus on how a being that old and powerful copes with boredom, guilt, and unwanted obligations.
You do not need to have read every previous iteration of the character to follow this volume, though knowledge of the wider Sandman and earlier Lucifer comics adds texture. Taken on its own, Lucifer Vol 3 gives a snapshot of a world where Heaven, Hell, and Earth overlap in nightclubs, side streets, and forgotten corners, with one very tired fallen angel trying to keep his autonomy intact.
