Lower Leaping Books in Order

Lower Leaping is Jill Steeples at her most Cotswold and comforting. The series is set in a picture-postcard village, but the real draw is not just the scenery. These books are about what happens when the life you thought you had slips sideways, and you have to work out who you are next.

The Forever Cottage introduces Tess Alexander at Hollyhocks Cottage in the village of Lower Leaping. She thinks she and her husband Charles are moving toward an easy next chapter, then devastating news blows those plans apart and leaves her trying to find her feet again. With Barney the beagle for company, Tess turns back toward parts of herself that have been pushed aside. She begins transforming a neglected garden office into a retreat of her own, and that practical project becomes part of her emotional one too.

Fresh starts are the point, but they are never tidy.

A big part of the series is the network around Tess. Friends such as Gina, Suzy, and Dilly matter just as much as the romance, and family complications are never far away either. Her daughter Hannah comes home from Australia. Her mother Marjorie starts behaving out of character. Small village remarks carry more weight than they should. A throwaway comment in the pub can shake a friendship. That is very much the Lower Leaping way. These are books about how support works, and about how fragile trust can be when life is already wobbling.

Romance is there, but it is handled with patience. Tess’s connection with Rob Templeton grows out of kindness, shared uncertainty, and the sense that both of them need room to rebuild. In Healing Hearts at The Forever Cottage, Tess is ready to welcome guests to the Garden Retreat, but Rob’s past, family worries, Barney’s antics, and tension inside her friendship circle make that harder than it sounds. The ongoing conflict is less about villains and more about confidence, honesty, and whether people can really change course.

What makes Lower Leaping work is its balance. The books give you cottages, gardens, village gossip, and romantic possibility, but they also stay close to grief, reinvention, middle-aged uncertainty, and the work of building a life on new terms. The countryside has a healing quality in these stories, but it is never treated like magic. Tess still has to make choices, have awkward conversations, and risk disappointment.

If you like feel-good fiction that still has some bruises on it, this series is a good fit. It is warm reading, but not weightless. The comfort comes from seeing characters earn their second chances, not just being handed them.
