Author bio
Louise Douglas was born in Sheffield, Yorkshire, and has spent most of her adult life in North Somerset, close to the Mendip Hills. She grew up loving stories and went on to build a career with words, first as a journalist and then as a copywriter.
Writing fiction was always the real ambition. For years she fitted it around full time work and raising three sons, scribbling ideas in spare moments and wondering if she would ever finish a whole novel.
In 2006 she finally gave herself permission to try.
With her partner away for a week and her children old enough to need her a little less, she enrolled on a postal fiction course and began drafting what would become The Love of My Life. She wrote in the evenings after work, steadily building a story about first love, loss and the pull of home. When the manuscript was finished, it secured her an agent and a two book deal, and the novel was later longlisted for both the Romantic Novel of the Year and the Waverton Good Read awards.
She followed it with Missing You, a quietly intense story about two damaged people finding their way back to love, which won the Romantic Novelists' Association People's Choice award. The Secrets Between Us took her work in a darker, more Gothic direction and was chosen for the Richard and Judy Summer Read, bringing her to a wider audience. Books such as In Her Shadow and Your Beautiful Lies continued to explore how family history, betrayal and the weight of the past can shape a life.
Douglas describes her work as contemporary Gothic. Many of her novels are set in and around the West Country or on dramatic coastlines, from South Yorkshire mining towns and Dartmoor asylums to lakeside cottages and remote boarding schools. Others travel further afield, to the sun scorched villas of Sicily in The House by the Sea and The Secret of Villa Alba, or to the Breton seaside town of Morranez, home to the Toussaints Detective Agency in The Lost Notebook, The Summer of Lies and The Sea House.
Wherever she sets a book, place is never just background, it is part of the mystery.
Her stories blend suspense, romance and family drama. Ordinary people stumble into extraordinary situations, old secrets refuse to stay buried and hauntings may be psychological, supernatural or a bit of both. She has a particular gift for writing about grief, loyalty and the complicated ways love can turn protective, obsessive or destructive.
In 2021 The House by the Sea won the Jackie Collins Romantic Thriller award, confirming the appeal of her atmospheric, slow burning mysteries. More recently she has turned to historical settings in The Room in the Attic, with its eerie Dartmoor timelines, and The Emerald Shawl, which follows a pioneering woman journalist through the foggy streets and dangerous secrets of Victorian Bristol.
Douglas still lives in Somerset with her partner, three grown up sons and a much loved dog. When she is not at her desk, she is likely to be outside walking, watching rugby, sketching or reading. She stays in close touch with readers and book clubs, and remains quietly delighted that the ghostly, twisty stories she once wrote in the evenings have become the work of her everyday life.
