Series background & context

The Lori Anderson series follows a Florida bounty hunter who is very good at finding people who do not want to be found. Lori is tough, quick-thinking, and used to working alone, but her job is never separate from the rest of her life. She is also a single mother to Dakota, and the need to protect and provide for her daughter shapes almost every risk Lori takes.

The series begins with Deep Down Dead, when Lori takes a job that sends her after JT, the former mentor who taught her the bounty-hunting trade. It should be a straightforward pickup, but old loyalties, criminal networks, and a tight deadline turn the job into a dangerous road trip. Lori's work takes her through Florida and beyond, where the rules can change quickly and help is rarely uncomplicated.

She does not wait around to be rescued.

The books build on the consequences of earlier cases, particularly Lori's complicated connection with JT and the people who know too much about her past. In Deep Blue Trouble, an unofficial deal sends her west on another urgent hunt. Deep Dirty Truth raises the stakes closer to home, forcing Lori to race across Florida when her family is threatened. Deep Dark Night shifts the action to a locked-down Chicago high-rise, turning a covert operation into a tense, contained survival story.

There is also The Last Resort, a short prequel that shows Lori early in her training. It is a useful extra for readers who want to see how she began, though Deep Down Dead is the best introduction to the main series. Starting with the first novel gives the emotional connections and the recurring trouble around Lori's family more room to land.

These are action thrillers first and foremost. Expect chases, criminal schemes, close calls, and deadlines that leave little room for a careful plan. But the series works because Lori's fights are personal. She is not chasing danger for the thrill of it. She is trying to keep the people she loves safe while making a living in a job that keeps pulling her toward the worst parts of other people's lives.

Florida matters here too. The heat, highways, theme-park gloss, coastal cities, and criminal undercurrents give the books an energetic, rough-edged backdrop. Lori is practical and often outnumbered, but she keeps looking for the next move. Readers can expect a capable heroine, a steady sense of momentum, and cases where getting the fugitive is only the beginning of the problem.
