Author bio

Loraine Peck was born in Grafton, New South Wales, raised by an artist and a pilot, and schooled on Sydney's Northern Beaches. She has said she spent plenty of time sneaking off to the beach. At twelve, she wanted to be a ballerina because she could dance and was hopeless at sport.

Before fiction, her working life was all over the place, in the best way. She worked as a portrait painter and a magician's assistant in Sydney, then moved on to dealing blackjack on the Gold Coast after being sawn in half one too many times on stage. Later she bartended and sold lobsters in the United States, worked in film distribution, and built a marketing career that took her through Australia, Asia, the Middle East and the US.

She didn't come to publishing in a straight line.

Peck has said she always wanted to write crime thrillers, but for years it stayed in the background while work and family took over. Eventually she decided to learn the craft properly. She took writing courses, including the six-month novel writing course at Curtis Brown Creative, and approached the move into fiction like a real reset, not a hobby.

That change led to The Second Son, her debut novel, published in 2021. Set around a Croatian Australian crime family in Western Sydney, it follows Johnny Novak and his wife Amy through murder, revenge, and impossible choices. Readers who connect with it often like the way Peck mixes gangland danger with marriage, parenting, and the secrets people keep at home.

The book won the 2021 Ned Kelly Award for Best Debut Crime Fiction, and it was also shortlisted for two Davitt Awards and the Danger Award. Peck followed it with The Double Bind in 2023, sending Amy and Johnny to a seaside town in northern New South Wales for a supposed fresh start that turns out to be anything but simple.

Family is where her crime stories do their sharpest work.

Peck has spoken about drawing on stories her Croatian husband told her about growing up in Western Sydney. She has also said she is fascinated by people who change their fate, for better or worse, and that idea runs straight through her fiction. Her characters are often trying to step away from violence, bad habits, old loyalties, or the expectations of the people who raised them.

You can see that pull in both of her novels. The Second Son asks what happens when family duty and personal conscience collide. The Double Bind keeps digging at the same question from a new angle, as Amy and Johnny try to build a quieter life and find that the past has its own plans. That gives her thrillers a grounded feel. The action matters, but the real pressure usually comes from home.

She has named The Collector, the film True Romance, and The Dry as works that stayed with her. There is menace in her fiction, but there is also dark humor and a strong sense of pace. Today she spends her time between Sydney and the Gold Coast with her husband, still writing the kind of crime fiction she long wanted to read.
