Author bio
Lois Winston was born in New Jersey and has spent most of her life in the Garden State, apart from a stretch in Philadelphia and its suburbs. She studied graphic design and illustration at Temple University's Tyler School of Art, which helps explain the visual detail and crafty know-how that show up all through her fiction.
Before books became her main job, Winston built a long career in the craft world. She once said that happened almost by accident, after overhearing someone in a needlework shop mention freelance design work. She made a call, learned fast, and went on to create needlework and craft projects for kit manufacturers, book publishers, and magazines. It gave her a close-up view of deadlines, editors, personalities, and the small disasters of working life.
Writing came later.
In 1995, she has said, characters from a dream took over her brain and refused to leave until she told their story. She wrote a romance manuscript in a rush, assumed she had done something brilliant, and then learned the slower truth about publishing. Contest entries, rewrites, workshops, and years of persistence followed. That long apprenticeship shows in the way her books move quickly but still feel carefully built.
Her first published novel, Talk Gertie to Me, introduced readers to Winston's mix of family comedy, romance, and everyday messiness. It was followed by Love, Lies and a Double Shot of Deception, a romantic suspense story with money, secrets, and danger in the background. Readers who start with her romance usually stay for the banter. Her heroines are rarely polished fantasy figures. They are smart women dealing with jobs, relatives, bad timing, and complicated feelings.
Then her career took a sharp turn. An editor was looking for craft-themed mysteries, and Winston's background made her the obvious person to try. The result was Assault with a Deadly Glue Gun, the first Anastasia Pollack mystery. It spun her experience in the consumer crafts industry into a series about a New Jersey magazine crafts editor juggling debt, murder, family chaos, and almost no peace and quiet. Later Anastasia books such as A Stitch to Die for and Guilty as Framed kept building that world with humor, danger, and domestic exhaustion.
That combination turned out to suit her very well.
Winston did not stay in one lane. She also wrote the Empty Nest mysteries, beginning with Definitely Dead and Literally Dead, which follow Gracie Elliott, an empty-nester and aspiring novelist who keeps tripping over corpses. She has written romantic suspense like Someone to Watch Over Me, short romance, children's fiction such as The Magic Paintbrush, and nonfiction too. Her Top Ten Reasons Your Novel Is Rejected draws on another part of her working life, including twelve years as an associate at a literary agency.
Across genres, a few things keep returning. Winston likes ordinary women under unusual pressure. She likes New Jersey attitude, family interference, workplace headaches, and people who are funnier than they mean to be. Even in the cozier books, there is usually money trouble, emotional baggage, or a job on the line. The stakes may involve murder, but the texture often comes from the things readers recognize right away: bills, in-laws, bad bosses, missed chances, and the need to keep going.
These days, she continues to draw on decades in publishing and the craft industry. Her books feel lived-in because the worlds inside them usually are. Whether she is writing a comic romance, a mystery with a glue gun in the title, or a story for younger readers, Winston tends to return to the same question: what does an ordinary person do when life gets ridiculous?
