Author bio
Livia J. Washburn has spent her life in North Texas, in a small town northwest of Fort Worth. She grew up in a family that worked with its hands. Her parents ran a beauty shop out of their home, and later her mother went back to school and became a first grade teacher. That mix of everyday talk, practical work, and small town life shows up all through Washburn’s fiction.
Writing was not the original plan.
She has said that she more or less stumbled into the business after marrying writer James Reasoner. While typing his manuscripts, she kept noticing turns the story might have taken, and before long she was writing herself. Her first published story, “The Lord Will Provide,” appeared in Mike Shayne Mystery Magazine in 1980. Her first novel followed a few years later, and then the work kept widening: mysteries, westerns, romance, fantasy, and historical fiction, often under several pen names.
That range is part of what makes her bibliography fun to explore.
Readers who meet her through the Fresh-Baked Mysteries usually start with A Peach of a Murder. Those books follow retired teacher Phyllis Newsom in Weatherford, Texas, and they mix small town murder, friendship, and baking in a way that feels easy to settle into. If you come in through Frankly My Dear, I’m Dead, you get a different side of Washburn: a cozy mystery with a literary travel angle and a heroine who keeps finding trouble on themed tours.
Then there is Wild Night, the book that put her early mystery writing on the map. Set in 1920s Hollywood and featuring Lucas Hallam, it won both the American Mystery Award and the Private Eye Writers of America award for best original paperback. She later returned to fantasy with Witch Got Your Tongue, about a young woman who discovers her magic works only when she sings, and to historical romance with books such as Mending Fences and Yesterday’s Flame.
She has never seemed interested in staying in one lane for long.
That variety makes sense when you look at her life. Washburn and Reasoner built their own home with help from family, doing much of the work themselves, and she has often talked about loving tools, carpentry, and hands-on projects. In 2009, the couple lost their home and studio in a wildfire, a brutal setback, but they rebuilt. That practical stubbornness feels very much in step with her characters, who are often ordinary people pushed into hard situations and expected to keep going.
She has also worked closely with her husband on collaborative books, sometimes under other names, while continuing to build her own body of work. Across all those books, certain things keep returning: Texas landscapes, frontier history, older characters who still have plenty of fight left in them, women who refuse to sit quietly, and a fondness for mysteries that start in everyday places.
Now she lives in the Texas countryside with James Reasoner and their rescue dogs. She still writes across genres, still enjoys hands-on work away from the keyboard, and still brings a strong sense of place to her stories. That is one reason her books can feel so different on the surface and still unmistakably belong to the same writer.
