Author bio
Lisa Stone lives in England and has three children. Her work moves between two very different kinds of stories: the foster-care memoirs published as Cathy Glass, and tense psychological thrillers published under her own name.
Writing started early. At school, she wrote poems and articles for the school magazine, then moved on to short stories, radio plays, and novels as a teenager. That long habit of putting stories on the page stayed with her, even before she had a publishing career.
She has said that writing became a way to process difficult experiences.
Her breakthrough came with Damaged in 2007, published as Cathy Glass. The book tells the story of Jodie, a deeply troubled child placed in foster care, and it opened the door to a long run of memoirs about children and families navigating fear, loss, neglect, recovery, and change. The people in these books are given pseudonyms, reflecting the need to protect their privacy.
The Cathy Glass books are not tidy, easy stories.
They follow the everyday work of building trust, setting boundaries, dealing with social services, and helping a child feel safe in an unfamiliar home. Books such as Hidden, Cut, The Saddest Girl in the World, Nobody’s Son, and Girl Alone focus on young people whose behavior often makes more sense once their past comes into view.
Will You Love Me? is especially personal. It tells the story of Lucy, who first came into the family as a foster child and was later adopted. Alongside the memoirs, Stone has also written practical books including Happy Kids, Happy Adults, and Happy Mealtimes for Kids, drawing on her experiences with family life, behavior, routines, and food.
She also writes fiction as Cathy Glass. The Girl in the Mirror follows a young woman uncovering buried family memories, while Run, Mummy, Run centers on a mother trapped in an abusive marriage. Both carry the same interest in ordinary lives pushed into frightening situations.
As Lisa Stone, she turns that interest toward suspense. The Darkness Within begins with a heart transplant and an unsettling change in a young man’s behavior. Stalker looks at the dangers of surveillance, The Doctor takes readers behind a neighbor’s closed door, and later novels such as Taken, The Cottage, and The Gathering build their tension around missing people, isolated places, and secrets that do not stay hidden.
Across both names, Stone writes about people trying to make sense of danger and find a way forward. The settings may change, but the questions are often close to home: who can be trusted, what is a family responsible for, and what does safety really look like?
