Author bio

Lisa Regan grew up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in a house where books were everywhere and the library card was used often. When one of her parents brought home an old typewriter and set it in front of her at eleven, she started banging out stories and never really stopped.

She studied at Bloomsburg University, earning a bachelor's degree in English and then a master of education. For a while she imagined herself teaching literature, but classroom life did not grab her the way stories did, so she finished her degree and went looking for another path.

Like a lot of crime writers, she worked a string of very real-world jobs. Over the years she taught martial arts, managed a bookstore, worked as a certified nursing assistant, and eventually built a long career as a paralegal in Philadelphia. The legal work paid the rent and also gave her a close-up view of how investigations, courtrooms and paperwork really run.

All that time she was writing in the margins of the day. Nights, lunch breaks and early mornings went into the manuscript that became Finding Claire Fletcher, a novel about a kidnapped girl who crosses paths with a struggling detective. The book took years to finish and revise, but when it finally reached readers it sold far beyond her modest expectations and connected with people who cared about missing children stories as much as she did.

Regan followed that with the FBI thriller Aberration / Kill For You and the gritty Philadelphia-set Hold Still and Cold-Blooded, introducing private investigator Jocelyn Rush. Those early books established what many readers now look for in her work, stubborn women at the center of the story, an undercurrent of danger, and a focus on what violence does to families over the long haul.

Her biggest leap came with the Detective Josie Quinn series, starting with Vanishing Girls. At a publisher's suggestion she built a whole world around a flawed, fierce small-town detective in fictional Denton, Pennsylvania. Across the series, Josie and her team tackle missing persons, cold cases and buried scandals while Josie wrestles with a childhood shaped by secrets and abuse. Readers responded to the combination of tight plotting, emotional stakes and the sense that the town itself is a character.

Regan's books often circle the same obsessions, the ripple effects of trauma, the ways ordinary people can become heroes or villains under pressure, and the closed doors of families and communities. She is known for fast pacing and for digging into her characters' inner lives without slowing the story, something she credits to years spent listening carefully to people in crisis.

Today she writes full time, but the rest of her life looks comfortably ordinary. She lives in the Philadelphia area with her husband, their daughter and a Boston Terrier named Mr. Phillip, and she still treats writing as a job that gets done a few pages at a time. When she is not working on the next Josie Quinn novel or side project, she shares what she has learned with other writers and spends time talking with readers who have made Denton and its detectives part of their own reading lives.
