Author bio
Lisa Harris grew up in the Pacific Northwest and went to high school in Portland, Oregon. In 1991 she graduated from Harding University with degrees in consumer sciences and Bible studies.
Adventure and faith were part of the story early.
After college, Harris and her husband spent five years in West Africa doing training and church-planting work. She would later spend 19 years as a missionary in southern Africa and live on four continents. Those years gave her a close look at border crossings, bush travel, medical need, political instability, and the daily courage of ordinary people, all things that would later shape the feel of her fiction.
Writing started young. As a child, she won a Read magazine award for a short story called "King's Rescue." But the real turning point came later, after she and her husband moved back to the United States in 1997 and adopted a son. With a new baby at home, no car, and long stretches of quiet, she finally sat down to do the thing she had wanted to do for years, write.
It did not turn into a career overnight. Harris spent time writing articles, devotionals, short stories, and novellas before landing a novella in the anthology To Catch a Thief in 2003. Her early books leaned toward historical romance, including Michaela's Choice, Rebecca's Heart, and Adam's Bride. Those stories showed her interest in faith, family, and women trying to rebuild their lives after loss or disappointment.
Then the suspense side of her work came roaring forward.
Books like Blood Ransom, Dangerous Passage, Vendetta, The Escape, and Port of Origin helped define her as a writer who likes speed, danger, and characters forced to make hard choices under pressure. She has written police procedurals, missing-person thrillers, medical thrillers, post-grid survival novels, and psychological suspense. Series such as The Nikki Boyd Files, US Marshals, Fallout, and Shadow Stalkers each take that basic instinct, put good people in terrible situations, and see what they do next.
Her settings matter, too. Harris often writes about Africa, or about people whose work pulls them into places where law, medicine, aid work, and violence collide. Human trafficking, corruption, kidnappings, disease outbreaks, and survival without modern systems show up often in her books. So do faith, justice, and the stubborn refusal to give up on people.
She rarely writes small problems.
At the same time, she has never stayed in just one lane. Alongside the high-stakes suspense, she has written the lighter Cozy Crumb Mystery books, historical romances, children's picture books like Morgan's Mixed Up Morning and Ellie Goes On Safari, and even nonfiction. That range makes sense when you look at her life. Travel, ministry work, family life, and a long habit of observing people have all fed the page in different ways.
Her work has reached a wide audience, with more than a million books sold, and Dangerous Passage won a Christy Award. But what stands out most is how lived-in her stories often feel. Even when the plots move fast, the settings have texture, and the moral pressure on her characters feels real.
These days, Harris lives in Texas with her husband. She still loves family time, travel, and trying new ethnic recipes. After dozens of books, she still writes like someone who enjoys a good chase.
