Recently widowed Niki inherits a magical Scottish estate and a mysterious job as Recorder. To manage feuding supernatural royalty, she must learn to wield powers and authority that her bullied former life never prepared her to claim.

New Recorder Niki must address an ancient injustice threatening the Pictish royal family while testing candidates for her adjutant. Growing powers, a childhood crush and her cat’s worrying behavior complicate an already crowded second week.

Niki’s hoped-for holiday in a Celtic mountain realm becomes a nightmare of snow, isolation and lost magical access. A Viking attack on the Gateway then forces her to confront betrayal and the limits of her growing authority.

During Valentine’s week, Niki expects officiating magical soul bonds to resemble her old registrar’s job. Instead, failed ceremonies, hidden deceptions and a mysterious ban on one race’s bondings threaten to join the wrong partners for life.

When a Viking king tries to evade Niki by hiding in the sacred tree Yggdrasil, her anger over past abuses drives a demand for justice. The resulting struggle brings new political dangers to the Gateway.

After kidnapping a king, Niki must handle the consequences while helping her closest friend navigate upheaval. With Dola temporarily unavailable, she faces a centuries-old problem at the Recorders’ Office without her usual source of confidence.

Eight stories revisit Niki and the Gateway’s inhabitants through magical celebrations, forgotten history and fresh mysteries. From Dola’s origins to royal gatherings, the collection follows friendships, acts of justice and complications between the main adventures.

A seemingly simple dispute takes Niki to Galicia, where religious authority masks oppression and carefully maintained lies. With her powers and jurisdiction in doubt, she must find another way to uncover the truth and deliver justice.
