Ling & Ting: Together in All Weather

Series background & context
Ling and Ting are twin sisters. People often assume they are exactly the same, but the whole series is built around proving that they are not.
That small idea gives Grace Lin a lot of room to play. Ling and Ting have the same brown eyes, the same pink cheeks, and the same happy smiles, but they make different choices. They misunderstand things in different ways. They take turns being practical, silly, clever, stubborn, and kind.
The books are early readers, so the chapters are short and the sentences are clear. Each volume is made from a handful of small stories. That structure is friendly for children who are just starting to read longer books on their own. A reader can finish one chapter, feel successful, and come back for the next.
Ling & Ting: Not Exactly the Same! introduces the twins through haircuts, dumplings, magic tricks, and other everyday moments. Ling & Ting Share a Birthday keeps the focus tight with cakes, presents, wishes, and a secret. Ling & Ting: Twice as Silly leans into jokes, pretend play, and goofy logic. Ling & Ting: Together in All Weather moves through the seasons, giving the sisters fresh things to try in winter, spring, summer, and fall.
The humor is gentle and very kid-shaped. A joke might come from planting cupcakes, sharing shoes, or believing twins can read each other’s minds. Lin does not talk down to the reader. She trusts children to notice the setup, the little twist, and the way the pictures add another layer.
The series also works well for read-alouds with younger children. The repetition helps, and so does the fact that the twins’ personalities stay consistent across the books. Kids can start to predict who will say what, then laugh when the story nudges them another way.
At heart, Ling and Ting is about closeness without sameness. The sisters love being together, but the books never flatten them into one person. For beginning readers, that makes the series funny, reassuring, and easy to return to.
