Author bio

Lily King grew up in Massachusetts and studied English literature at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She later earned an M.A. in creative writing from Syracuse University, which helped shape the reading life and writing practice behind her fiction.

After graduate school, she took a job teaching high school English in Valencia, Spain. That move mattered. It was there that she began writing her first novel, drawing on the dislocation of living abroad and on the close observation that would become a steady part of her work.

It took eight years, a string of moves around the United States, and a mix of bookstore, restaurant, and teaching jobs before The Pleasing Hour finally appeared in 1999.

That debut follows an American au pair in France and already shows what King does so well. She places a character in emotional trouble, then lets setting, family pressure, and private longing do the rest. The English Teacher came next, a close look at a single mother, her teenage son, and the secrets inside a carefully managed life.

Her third novel, Father of the Rain, turns to a daughter's bond with her charming, alcoholic father. Then Euphoria opened her work out in a new direction, moving to 1930s New Guinea and the world of three anthropologists locked in a volatile triangle of ambition, attraction, and professional rivalry. That book won the Kirkus Prize and brought her a much wider readership.

Even when the settings change, King keeps coming back to love, grief, loyalty, and the ways families can both steady us and undo us.

With Writers and Lovers, she returned to contemporary life and found many new readers, following Casey Peabody, a waitress and aspiring novelist trying to keep going after loss. People connected with the book's mix of money trouble, artistic doubt, romance, and stubborn hope. Her story collection, Five Tuesdays in Winter, carries that same emotional honesty into shorter forms and was a finalist for the Story Prize.

King has also published stories, essays, and reviews for many years. Her first short story appeared in Glimmer Train in 1991, and her work has since shown up in magazines, newspapers, and anthologies. Her books have been translated widely, which makes sense. Even when her characters are in unusual situations, their worries about love, family, work, and self-respect feel close to home.

Her newest novel, Heart the Lover, came out in 2025. It returns to first love, friendship, and the long afterlife of choices made when people are young, with a connective thread to Writers and Lovers that longtime readers will notice.

She lives in Portland, Maine, with her husband, two daughters, and two dogs. That sounds pleasantly ordinary, which somehow fits her fiction. Her books often reach big feelings through everyday details, quiet humiliations, and the small moments when a life starts to tilt in a new direction.
